Default Stainless steel headstuds

Looking through one of our English Jaguar club magazines and I saw an advert for high tensile stainless steel headstuds by David Manners, a Jaguar spares dealer. Cost about £130 a set.

I don't know if it includes the 5/16" short ones at the front, but these don't corrode badly anyway.

its certainly a good idea, but one would hope that if you had to do the head once and managed to get all the studs out you wouldn't have to do it again. even if you did in the next few years you wouldn't expect the new one to corrode would you?

i suppose it would depend on the price difference and if you expect to keep the car for long enough to have to do the head a second time.

FWIW, when replacing a head gasket I seal off the studs right where they exit the block...thus turning "wet studs" into "dry studs".

Yes, this will stop head gluing to block, but I think the main thing with the stainless ones is to stop the corrosion of the length sitting in the coolant jacket. This is the first time I have seen HT stainless studs advertised from a large spares supplier, and the kits are for all versions of the XK engine, short stud blocks included. If it was me rebuilding an XK engine, I think I would use a set because I suspect the extra price over the normal steel items will only be a small percentage of the money needing spending on the engine.

BTW, I saw the advert again, and the price says "from £120", so I suspect the long stud set will cost much more than the short ones.

EVANS is the Beee's knees...

Ive seen this stuff perform in some of the most agressive heat generating engines in harsh conditions: 103F ambiant air Temps. 143F track Temps. @ Buttonwillow Raceway in a GT35R 13B REW that was bridgeported & running 7500 RPM's throughout the majority of the day...
