Got a fuel leak from around the big jet on the bottom of the carb. Can I just unscrew this jet with the carbs still attached and replace the O-ring?, or do I need to disassemble the float bowl, etc?

Wish the car had SUs, because I could fix those in my sleep!

 

Being a 71 I'm not sure if it's a plastic snap in plug with a metal cap (72 & 73 usually are) but if it is, don't try to pry it out or you risk breaking it. You can remove the fuel bowl easily enough if you're reasonably dexterous without pulling the carb - just the 6 straight head screws.. Then if it's the plastic snap in plug you can release the tangs that hold it in and push it out to replace the O-ring.

 

Interesting. So the brass jet actually stays in place when you remove the fuel bowl. Thanks for the tip.

 

It should be just a plug on your car - not a jet. But it can be either a screw-in brass plug (it'll have a slot to unscrew if so) or a snap-in plastic plug with a brass cover (featureless). You can remove the fancier brass one without removing the bowl. Snapped a pic of both in the shop.

 

It was the screw in brass plug. Easy to remove but I took off the air cleaner to get better access. Rubber ring was pretty loose. It looks to be about 13/16" in diameter. Unfortunately none of the O-rings I have in stock will work, but I did order two carb rebuild kits last week for $50 and they're on the way.

No problem. Nice that you have the far superior brass plugs. BTW for the archives... size of the plug O-ring is -114 which as you say is 13/16 OD.
