... and when I put the steering wheel over this section it goes on fine, a little stiff maybe, but seems fine. Only question I feel left with her is given how wide the hole in the centre of the steering wheel is then once the wheel is in place what is to stop the split cones from just falling out into the centre of the wheel and rattling around. It doesn't seem snug enough to hold them in place.? is a piece or a positioning still missing here.?
I've had my steering wheel off many times and never had a problem with the split cones. There is a matching opposite chamfer on the steering wheel hub that retains them.
I think they mate with the rear of the steering wheel hub to keep it centered or to prevent any sideways or up and down play. I have no clue but I use vaseline anyway. I found one half of the circle in a radio I bought from David one time and I knew exactly what it was. How it ended inside the cassette I will never know.
The post from adenshillito dated may 2015 is correct (see below) on the front side. I held the split ring on with upper spline with standard grease. I had to remove the small washer behind the copper ring, rubber ring and the large washer behind the rubber ring to get enough length in the upper steering column to screw on the brass rod in the center of the two steering columns for the horn. I used Gunk (citrus safe) degreaser then silicone lubricant, rubber mallet to get upper column to move and a chisel to open the cast tightening ring to get the ring largenough to get over the outside of the nylon alignment ring all the way to the bottom of the turn signal mounting bracket. The assembly is nise and tight and the horn works properly. I also changed the two horns to make them much lowder.
