From the service manual:

"Early cars" 5-6 pounds
"Late cars" 7-8 pounds

No mention of breakpoint between eary and late nor why there would be a difference...unless the gasket material was changed, I suppose.

Personally, I use a firm "three finger pull" on the cam cover nuts.

Cheers
DD

I used 10lb seemed pretty light. Good sites for parts but the postage from the usa is ridiculous. They seem to have to use a private contractor uspc so when I order a jaguar sticker for $6.50 they want to charge me $56 for delivery. So sorry but im not liking being robbed. I find buying on ebay small items from the UK, couple of dollars. Ive sent them an email to find out if we can be more reasonable.

I didn't notice you were in AU, but yes, shipping costs from USA to AU via the US Mail are absurd but are also the cheapest, Fedex and UPS are almost double. A sticker or two can be sent in a plain letter envelope for the cost of the USA stamps to AU. I would write to them and tell them exactly that.

I have the same problem ordering from UK to USA, exhorbitant costs via Royal Mail. So you are saying that it costs little to ship from UK to AU ? I wonder how they do it.

Jose,
I had a 16kg (approx 38 lbs) package of auto parts shipped from the UK. It was sent 3-day mail at a cost of 141.20 pounds. I shipped a 24 lb package to North Carolina, Fedex next day delivery at a cost of $220.76. Royal mail is a lot cheaper than you think. Which Royal Mail are you using???

On a similar note to this thread, I believe the head on the xj6 is meant to be retorqued at every service, is this right? If so what is the correct method, do you loosen the stud before retorquing?

in my Jaguar Service Manual "Early" means prior to Engine BL137746 (4.2 liter).
{see attached chart}. Another distinction between Early and Later is the Kiekert door locking system introduced for 1986 cars.

I assume everybody knows that torque wrench settings are in FOOT POUNDS, not "POUNDS" per se.

I have received quotes from UK where the shipper was using Royal Mail to quote me.

Gah! What a dope I am for missing that !

In terms of early/late engine changes a car with Kiekert locks would definitely be "late", yes, as engine numbers were up in the 167xxx range in mid-85 when the Kiekert system was introduced.

Just a mention, I have found both cam cover hardware and new Jag stickers on E-bay, and many ship internationally. Usually - not always - they run a bit cheaper than some of the Jag specific sites. I wasn't sure some of what I was looking for was "legit" jag parts, but do far everything I have ordered has come with Jag paperwork. May be worth a look.

unless you find new-old-stock parts, everything for the Series 1, 2, 3 XJ and other old Jaguars, is aftermarket reproductions and usually made to Jaguar Specification in Europe or Asia.
