transporters

you get what you pay for, no such thing as "dirt cheap" and "good quality"; gasoline is not cheap, and entrusting your prized possession to a "dirt cheap" transporter increases the risks of loss and damage considerably.
if you want the cheapest, rent a car hauler from U-Haul or others, and haul it yourself.
if you hire a transporter, check them with the BBB or other agencies by googling "such and such company complaints"

It's sorta like Ebay for shipping. I've gone this route with good results but the usual caveats, as Jose mentioned, most certainly apply.
Picking a reputable transporter is the most important thing. After that, flexibility on pick-up and delivery dates will generally get you a better rate. If you're in a hurry and have a carved-in-granite schedule, it'll cost more.
Some transporters charge more if picking up or delivering to a residential address as it usually involves more work. If you can get the car to an industrial/commercial/warehouse location it might save you money....especially if it's a location regularly used by the transporter.
Open versus closed transport makes a big difference as well. If you don't care how dirty the car will get then open transport can save you money.
Cheers
