Default Trip computer dark

Took my '84 XJ6 for a new hazard switch and (thanks to this group) got what looked to be a good one. 24 hours later, my turn signals stopped working (but hazards were fine), so I took it back to the shop which replaced the flasher unit but not before the turn signals miraculously self-healed and started working again.

Now I've got working signals and hazards but my trip computer is dark, no functionality. My wife noticed a brief flicker of life when I turn the key in the ignition but nothing else.

Any input on what to test for or likely suspects?

Thanks in advance,
Rhett

Hi Rhett,

Display flickered... suggests loose wiring / earth.

There is a fuse under the dash for the trip computer which may have blown, in which case, why did it spike??

This sounds silly, but did someone push the 'Disp.' button two from the right on the trip computer? That kills the display until you push it again, just like being out of phase in a teleporter...

Hope this helps,

Cheers,

Nigel

Pull the t/c out of the dash....just get your fingernails under the edges and wiggle it out....and then unplug-and-reconnect the connector a few times.

This actually fixes a fair number of t/c problems

Worth a try, at least

Cheers

I tried the Disp. as that's happened to me before. I'll check the fuse and Doug's advice below and report back.

Add ideas:

1. The fuse has gone intermittent. Looks good, but flawed inside the glass.

2. Fuse holder contacts have lost their grip. Clean them, or merely roll the fuse in place.

3. Check the S57 Jaguar electric schematics Check for power.

4. Ignition switch feeds????

Reseating the fuse seems to have done the trick. Good thing as I don't seem to have a spare 2 amp in my set.

I feel like an idiot bothering you all with this but it honestly didn't occur to me that it might actually be an easy fix.

Thanks everyone!

Hi Rhett,

Far from it.

The idiot is the one who doesn't ask the question but blindly soldiers on thinking they know best and making a bigger mess of what they were trying to fix.

PS The trip computer is so old school that it probably doesn't know how to stop working anyway.

Cheers,

Nigel

I have been down that track before and learnt from it, always good to ask the questions you may think are silly. You don't know what you don't know and the only way to find out ask.

Now, go 'round and clean *all* your fuse clips and the metal end caps on the fuses. And, whenever you're working on the car and come across a ground point, take 5 minutes to remove the wires, clean everything up, and refasten. With these two things you'll pre-emptively eradicate most of the much-ballyhooed Lucas horrors

Cheers

This just happened to me - trip computer suddenly blank. Thanks to this advice it all works once again!

I'm not sure whether it was the unplugging and reconnecting the 2 connectors a few times, or twiddling the fuse that fixed it, but it took just seconds and I'm happy! Thanks Doug.
