Default Valve stuff

Can someone fill me in on the valve job that I should be thinking about. I've read a few places that I have to do something with the valves to avoid ruining the motor. I don't remember what it is though.

Yeah, on the DOHC, the lifters might "lift" too far and kiss the cam lobes. Exhaust side mostly, more het there, I suppose. Kits are made to secure them.

I think one must remove the cam covers to see of they are in place. Or if there is evidence of interference.

Good to look, either way. Fix or merely remove the angst factor on finding them n place.

Others can detail this further.

I took the covers off and checked tolerances. they all seemed within specs, but there is alot of valve chatter that I'd like to quiet down if I could. There was no evidence on adjusting them from under the covers though.

Tis a stake down kit you are looking for.

And, adjustment is by shimming the "buckets". A sort of black art as well as pure mathematics!!

Others can help more.

Measurement of lash is similar to all or most CI engines. A feeler guage between follower and cam nose.

Can't give you spec's though. My guess would be .014 or thereabouts.

Tag on cover says between 12 and 14. they all checked out fine.
I'm guessing I dont need to perform this illusive black art, but I'd like to get more info for sure.

Here are a couple of links with some description. If you do a search of this forum for stakedown kit you'll see some discussions. Opinions vary.

Adjusting the tappets is not so much a Black Art, as a PITA !! This is because the tappet shims are underneath the tappet, so if one is wrong, the tappet has to be removed and to do this the camshaft has to come off.

There is a procedure to go through that everybody that has ever done a Jaguar engine will be able to recite by heart, or even dream about !
