valve tapping

valve tapping
A few months ago-i changed my oil and went w 20/50. My valves were tapping-which I thought was caused by sludge getting inside the valves from a lighter oil and prob also cheaper. I had my truck mechanic do this instead of my reg jag mechanic bc it was convenient. The tapping is still there-what could I do to rectify this on my own or just play it safe and get it to my jag mechani c? Should I not drive the car until my mechanic looks it over?

How bad/loud/alarming is the tapping? Hard to put into words, I know. Does it sound like just one or two cylinders? Or all of them?
A very light tapping or clatter is perfectly normal....as it would be on any engine with non-hydraulic tappets. The normal clicking of fuel injectors adds to the symphony as well.
At the other extreme is the possibility that a tappet guide is walking upward and hitting the camshaft. This is bad and the noise is pronounced. Removing the cam covers for inspection will quickly reveal if this is happening. If not already installed a 'stake down kit' will prevent it from happening.
Have your Jag guy listen. He'll know.
Cheers
