I've got a nasty leak out of one of the ends of my power steering rack on my 81 XJ6. I know there are rebuild kits available, but am interested in a replacement rack. I have scoured the internet over the last day and every single resource I check shows they are backordered or out of stock.

On one site, they indicated the rack (out of stock) would fit other models, which prompted me to consider looking in this direction (other years and models) with hopes of finding one. I've also read some articles here that suggest some ZF Aluminum units would work as well (93 XJS ?) What other years & models of cars can I look at that will fit my car (aside from below) ? Fairly confident my rack is the 3-hole unit, but I will confirm.

try a used rack. Contact David at www.everydayxj.com and ask him if he has a good used one.

David dismantles these cars and most likely he has a non-leaker.

Keep the old one and get it rebuilt.

the trick in rebuilding these racks is Pressure Testing them after replacing the seals. Not everyone can do that, so replacing seals is only part of the job and if the rack is not pressure tested, it usually leaks even with new seals, when pressurized in the car.

you can also contact SNG Barratt USA store to see if they have remanufactured racks for your car or if they can refer you to a rebuilder.

I will say, I am pretty savvy in locating parts online and I must have checked 30 different parts outfits and each and every one of them said they were out of stock. I'm not opposed to rebuilding it myself (i'm certainly capable), but have read comments here about the failures of some (and would agree with you mentioning the testing). It's only the passenger side rod end that is leaking like a sieve. I assuming even just that one seal still requires a full tear-down, correct?

 

Any XJS rack will be a bolt in. The later ZF racks will require some modest bending of the lines. It is worth getting a ZF because they are more reliable and offer better feel.
