Default XJ6 S1 ignition upgrade

hi everyone-

Decided it was time to upgrade the ignition on my wife’s 71’ xj6. I will post photos later.
It is an all option 71’ with a Lucas 22D distributor with the ballast resistor.

i used the Pertronix LU166A ignitor conversion kit, new rotor and cap from Napa, and MSD 5565 spark plug wires.

The car has 37k original miles on her! When I pulled the cap, there was a rotor I have never seen before, the Lucas rev-limiter; which I saved. The points and condenser were original too! Out they came. The pertronix was a breeze to install, follow the directions, two screws mount the plate, two nuts hold down the electronics. Make sure to zip the wires down on the inside to the breaker plate, otherwise the spinning shaft and parts will chew them up! You will remove the ignition feed wire that is attached to the circular piece that goes between the cap and distributor. The new wires have a retainer that replaced it. The round magnetic trigger slips right below the rotor, and the rotor fits on top. Put the cap on. The original positive power lead is not used anymore, but I didn’t cut it, just zip tied it out of the way, while zipping the new power and ground wires towards the coil. On this car, the ground on the coil was a female spade, so I had to clip the new pertronix ground wire and attach s male connector. Again, zipping the original ground wire out of the way. Now, the tricky part. With ballast resistors, you have to attach the new power lead on the ignition side of the ballast along with the ignition wire. Went to Napa and got a dual crimp on connector that is a female with a male off to the side. Clipped the pertronix power lead connector, crimped the new dual one on, and pushed on the ballast, then pushed the ignition wire on to the secondary part. Pretty slick.

The MSD spark plug wires are 8mm made for a early model small block Chevy, so the bonus is two spare wires! The wires are all black, and with 90 degree ends on both sides, including the coil wire. They fit great, and are around $50 from the internet speed shops.

So for about $150, and an hour of time, ignition is done. Works great!

Another option. Upon advice from the Wizard of Oz (Grant Francis)

I ditched the 22D Lucas points distributor and went to a S3 45DM6 distributor with electronic ignition. Ballast resistor gone. Easy fix..... after much heart ache with points, condensers and so on.
I posted the 22D with many new parts to New Zealand for another forum member to deal with on his car..

Is it that simple? Do you not have to consider any other parts such as an amplifier?

Yes, amplifier is needed. The amplifier came with the distributor I bought.

Was considering the Pertronix kit, but then just decided to buy their electronic distributor for British 6 cylinder engines. Matched it with a Flamethrower coil, and new NGK plugs and plug leads. Car is much happier.

I don't believe the Series 1 had an ignition amplifier. There is nothing in the parts diagram in Haynes. My car was also missing the ballast resistor, which is not needed with my new setup.

Adrian, How hot does your coil run? can you touch it?

Good question. I'll check after the next drive and let you know.

Coil is comfortably warm to the touch but not hot when running.
