Default XJ6 S3 > Carburetor conversion

Hello,

My donor vehicle is very stubborn. It runs way too rich and I can't find the parts second hand to get it running properly so I thought I'd just convert it to lovely SU carburetors already.

If I'd take off the inlet manifold and swap it do I have a problem with anything?

Does anything else need to be changed?

Thanks

Well, since nobody has said anything I went ahead and tried. The series 3 head doesn't have the attachment for the cable from the gas pedal to mount it. The area behind the engine is a mess. The kickdown cable has to bend in many ways to reach where it should be mounted.

I will try to work around this but I've got another project coming (#4) that needs to be done before summer. I'll keep you updated when I find solutions.

I am planning to make a bracket that picks up on the bolts of the cam cover to hold the gas cable. The carburetors are mounted and it went well.

The thread on the rear bolts is longer because it has to hold a manifold AND the gas mechanism.

The series 1 has a filler cap on the rail. The series 3 has a filler cap on the expansion tank. The series 1 filler cap piece wont fit so I took the series 3 part that sits there without the filler cap. (waterpump tube diameter is wrong)

Apart from that not much. I lost a part that is important to getting the car running...

You need to use a fuel pump that is compatible with carbs. The L Jetronic fuel injection uses a pump designed for higher pressure than the carbs can handle!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you Bob, that is a good point. Can I swap over my series 1 pump and plug the return line?

The Series I XJ6 used 2 S.U. pumps (one for each tank).
You can use one pump with the changeover valve and cap the returns.

Late to reply, but you can drill and tap the S3 head in the same place as the S1 head for the plate that holds the kickdown cables.

I've installed an 87 S3 engine into a 72 S1 and then used the Strombergs (US car) with no issues aside from carburetor adjustments.

I decided to take the car apart. Couldn't get the pump to fit, to drill holes I would have to take off the head... So, next time this engine will run (will take some months, I prepared the engine to sit for a while) it will be in my series 1.
