Default XJC turn signal failure

Hello, I am a new member who is trying to get a 1975 XJC 4.2 Series II with 41,000 original miles back in order. I am the original owner, living in N.J. My current issue is non functioning turn signals. When I operate the stalk nothing (no sound or lights) happens. The hazard flashers light only on the driver side front and rear. All headlights and tail lights, brake light are functioning normally. I've switched bulbs left and right and nothing changes; still no turn signals on the right side. I need help diagnosing the problem and would like to know location of the flasher which I believe is one unit for both hazards and turn signals. Should I be checking grounds and where? the car has been sitting for ten years.

Joe,

I just gave a quickie answer in your New Member post regarding that.

The hazard switch itself is what I have found the prime culprit over many years.

Default Turn signal problems

Thanks for the reply Grant. So the hazard switch on the steering column can affect the turn signals? The switch is a little sloppy in it's up and down travel.

Sloppy is not good.

Mind you they are British Engineering at their very best.

New ones are pricey, and dont last long if used???, so when I replaced mine I simply forgot I had hazard flashers, and never actually touched that switch again.

Only once in my life have I found the need for hazard flashers. It was January 2016 when some "woman" totaled Wart (2001 Windstar), at night, in the rain, and I found myself at an odd angle to both the road and the surface of the earth, the back end being in a water filled ditch.

To *warn* other drivers of the *hazard* I put the flashers on. As I had never done that in that car it took several minutes to a) find them, and b) figure out how to activate them under those stressful conditions.

Nix's flashers work I think, but after warnings here and in other forums about their lack of dependability, I decided some time ago they would be for *EMERGENCIES* only. Such as, it's dark, raining, someone has collided with me, and Nix is in a water filled ditch.

Oh. Wait a minute!! I wouldn't have her out in the rain, and if there was water in the ditch, flashers wouldn't work anyway.

Never mind..............

I have found the need to use them a few times and usually when I'm the first on the scene of a nasty accident.....there not on long, just till the cavalry arrive.

If the wiring is fine, the switch might be repairable if it is causing the problem, or check eBay for a new one. Also check all fuses, sometimes they are the cause of electrical issues.

Looking at the wiring diagram it looks like the turn signal power gets routed via the hazard switch in its off position. When you switch them on this power changes to a non ignition source. Also in the switch are some other contacts to join all the lights for hard flashing.

As Grant said, your symptoms fit that switch being faulty or the contacts not making properly after years of just sitting. You could try exercising it and spraying in some WD40 or equivalent to see if it changes anything.

HA, all the ones I exercised fell apart.

They are a crap switch on a good day. The pivot pins are as frail as I have ever seen.

I'll second that, mine works about every third go, but I just cant be bothered with it at the moment as its not impacting anything else.......yet.
