1975 UF2W... vs UG2W... Serial Numbers?
I apologize if I ask too many questions. But I am still trying to figure out details of early XJ-S history. I was able to verify with the Jaguar Heritage Trust that UG2W... serial numbers were used before September 10th 1975 (the official launch date of the XJ-S). So the model year 1975 vs. model year 1976 idea is out the window.
This leaves the question when UF2W... serial numbers were actually used. One possible scenario would be that UF2W... serial numbers were used for any cars that were made one-by-one before the actual production line was up and running. And UG2W... serial numbers were used for all cars coming of a regular production line.
Does anyone know more about UF2W... serial numbers? Is there any literature that knows for sure?
Thanks, Andy, XJ-S Addict
P.S.: I do realize that my chances of ever scoring a UF2W... car are between zero and minus ten.

Just call it preproduction numbers. Jaguar had the habbit of selling preproduction vehicles with VINs which aren't 100% correct. My XJ8 is a very early model with a very low VIN and was made before the official launch date...
Same went for the X100 (XK). The preproduction odels were built and still sold. VW and co all scrap theirs.
So, I would assume that early preproductions had the different number.
