1976 XJS Value
My Dad is looking at selling his 1976 XJS, V-12, Red with tan leather interior. It has been garage kept and covered. It has 10,000 miles on it. All original nothing has been done to it. It still has the 8 track in it. What is the value of the car? I find everything from $1000- $9000. I appreciate any input on what the value is and what he may expect to get for it. He is 85 now and can't drive it anymore. Thank you.

Here's one view 1976 Jaguar XJS | Hagerty
I think they're low. Does your Dad's car have a manual transmission? Either way it's pretty collectible.

The value of the car is going to be largely based on condition. A manual transmission equipped car will add quite a bit of value. It sounds like the car is probably in great shape due to mileage and bring garage kept. However I would believe most of the rubber in the car will most likely all need to be replaced due to age. Post some pictures of the car and any maintenance history and you should be able to get a fairly accurate value. My personal opinion is the early xjs are less desirable then the later cars due to bumpers, interior trim, no wood, etc. However there is probably a niche market just for those early cars plus they didn't make very many of them so they are quite a bit rarer.

A quick look at Mecum auctions results suggests $7500. I'm basing this on the fact that there weren't any unexceptional XJS coupes that sold for more than 6500.00 and most that I saw were in excellent condition. Your car may command a 1000$ premium IF the low mileage could be proven and the car is in great shape. The fact that it's a '76, the first year, may intrigue some but could scare others. There were many XJS that were run many times before they sold. This suggest the market is thin and unless the right person is in the room it wont sell at all. Personally, I love 1st year cars and prefer to own them because often the true intent of the car only be seen in the early years. One example of this is the Porsche 928. In the first year they were truer sports cars, no sun roofs, manual seats, no arm rest, no bloat. A few years in they had rear AC, sunroofs, power seats, and a whole list of other weight adding "features".
Interesting to me... the most expensive XJS ever sold across the block at Mecum was Frank Sinatra's XJS-Coupe in excellent condition. It only commanded 22,500 in 2010. I was a bit surprised by that.
