1994 XJS Code FF39
My 1994 XJS 2+2 is showing code FF39. I understand this is the EGR valve. I have cleaned the valve and checked the vacuum lines. I disconnected the battery which clears the code for about 20 miles of driving (before returning). Does this mean the valve itself is bad, or a sensor? I understand the EGR solenoid can also cause the code? Any suggestions what to do as parts for the face-lift cars can be expensive!

You can try cleaning it out, which usually works. Remove the 3 bolts holding it on (8mm) and spray carb cleaner into it. Let the carb cleaner sit in it for awhile, then scrub away.
When you shake the EGR Valve something should be moving up and down inside of it, freely.
If you just want to buy another one, it should run you less than $100 new.
Be careful putting the screws back on. The one closest to the engine block is very tight, so your socket will want to crossthread it back in. Start it off with your fingers as long as you can. Once you get a few turns in, then put the socket back on to get it seated all the way.
