1995 4.0 aj16 convertible hesitate under load, perfect in neutral.
My 1995 4.0 aj16 convertible starts perfect and also revs up beautiful in neutral. When I put the car in drive or reverse the problem start. The car runs the die and runs again. It is hesitating all the time. When I accelerate full the engine seems to have power again and runs fine. When I do this there is a smell of unburned gasoline.
also the engine temp meter is running up when driving.
I'd check the MAF and use a multi meter to see if you're getting the correct readings at idle. I'd also remove the ECM from the passenger footwell and check the connections to the ECM. This area can hold water and then the pins on the ECM connections corrode just enough to provide incorrect sensor readings.

Ahh, I missed the temp issue. That would likely indicate that your thermostat needs to be replaced.
Really your issue regarding the engine could be:
1. oxygen sensors
2. throttle body cleaning
3. TPS replacement
4. dying coils
5. flakey crankshaft position sensor
6. corroded ECU pins
7. vacuum leak
8. coolant temperature sensor dying
9. dirty/faulty MAF
I'd start at the oxygen sensors. I bet they're original. They are long overdue for a replacement and owe you nothing.
It sounds like you will be replacing that themostat as well. You may as well replace the CTS (#8). The sensor is cheap and easy to replace. I would also suggest/recommend a coolant flush.
Let us know what you have chosen to do, and how it goes. Good luck.
I have an ECU from my original 1996 Jaguar XJS. Something happened and it wouldn't read the oxygen sensors right. I sent it out to get repaired and got it back, now I can't get it to idle right, the LTFTs are way out of whack. I can't send it back anymore because...well, that's a long story which involves my second 96 XJS getting stolen and crashed, so I didn't have the ability to test it for a very long time.
Anyways, are you saying you can troubleshoot, or reset ECUs for these cars? That would be amazing.

The happy ending is that I was able to reassemble the car using a parts car I stumbled across which was near my in-laws house! So, it worked out. I didn't want to start all over again with another XJS.
Anyways, I have held on to the ECU hoping that someone, someday could fix it.
As for the problem with the pins, I believe you can buy that part. You'd have to find someone that is proficient with soldering to get the part on. You are looking for Econoseal 344108-1
It can be done. I think what you are going to look for is someone that works on computers and knows how to solder motherboards and such....or maybe it's a hell of a lot simpler?

Thanks a lot! That can help repairing. Just have to find out how to remove the broken pins from the connector, is there a tool to remove the wires from te connector?
I believe you’re going to have to open the metal ECU box to expose both sides of that male connector. Once opened, you’ll most likely need someone skilled at soldering. Like I said before, someone proficient in customizing computers would probably make easy work of this.
You’re more replacing individual pins, but the entire 36 pin male connector.

Yes, that's the plan for the male connector but some male pins are stuck into the female connector (at the car side) and also this female plug is corroded. So i like to disensemble this female plug to get rid of the pins and clean the connections....will this work with a tool like this? https://www.mmobiel.com/nl/mmobiel-4...8aAnwpEALw_wcB
I can't be sure. I forgot what I used to release the pins on the female side...which is part number 344111-1 (if you're interested in replacing that part)
See these parts. You can reuse the plastic plug and only swap out the female connectors!
