1996 xjs brake light issue
Just finished installing a new fuel pump in the old girl. How I did it was not your usual effort.
Went in through the rear deck behind the rear seat........PIECE OF CAKE!!!!!!!!.
Got it all back together and took it for a ride around the block to make sure no issues/leaks/smell etc.....Everything Is Great!
But the brake lights now don’t work. Not sure if I knocked wire loose in the trunk (took everything out of the trunk)just to be safe incase my rear deck approach wasn’t going to work.
When I press the brake pedal......
1. NO STOP LIGHTS EITHER SIDE AND THE DASH LIGHT WARNING LIGHT GOES ON, THIRD LIGHT MOUNTED ON DECK LID WORKS!!
2. When in park and pressing pedal clicking sound under counsel. Believe it indicates the lamp bulb failure unit is working. Also after 30 secs. The light goes off indicating unit works.
3. Replaced the relay located in the trunk drivers side, way up underneath hard to get to without being a contortionist, NO DIFFERENCE!!
4. All bulbs were checked and OKAY!!
5. Checked fuse located under passenger side dash.....Looks Good!
PLEASE LET ME KNOW WHERE ELSE I SHOULD BE LOOKING AND CHECKING
AS ALWAYS THANKS FOR YOUR HELP!!!

Hi Softball
Your approach to changing the Pump sounds very interesting, have you got any Photos to show us what you did
Unfortunately cannot help you with your electrical problem, unless you disturbed or cut through a wire when doing the deck

I believe the wiring goes through the door sill, probably drivers side.

Page 25 of 74 is the diagram you want. You'll have to check for continuity between what wires you can find in front of the tank, and the wires behind the tank. It shouldn't be terribly difficult to repull any wires, once you find what's broken.
There is a "stop light bulb failure unit" in your left rear wheel arch...I'd start there.
I do want to hear more about your fuel pump replacement...

Thanks for the responses.
I will post how I did the fuel pump after I solve this stop light issue.
The gas tank was not moved or displaced whatsoever.
I did remove all the trim, support racks for the battery, convertible top pump etc.
If it is a wire or something like that it’s because I moved it while taking apart or putting back together.
I will check the bulb failure unit to see if it was displaced or coincidently failed while sitting for a week.
Thanks

I am really confused!!!!
According to what I read there are (3 items) located in the upper rear left trunk.
1. I found the Brake light relay and replaced it with a known good one and still the no brake light bulb comes on when I press the brake pedal. The third brake light on top works
2. I found the anti slosh relay
3. There is supposed to be a stop light failure warning switch....But there is not.....What is there is a speed interface unit.
SO WHERE IS THE STOP LAMP FAILURE WARNING SWITCH????????
Thanks

I need help from our electrical wizards?
I need serious help trying to solve my no brake light situation.
I posted a thread a couple of days ago and got 2 responses that were greatly appreciated!!
My cat has not been to a repair shop since purchased ~7 yrs ago
Background: I replaced the fuel pump in a different way so as not to have to move tank at all!! I removed everything from the trunk just in case my new approach was not going to work.
Everything with the fuel pump removal went GREAT!! Everything works and no leaks or smell..........BUT...........NOW
my brake lights........ DO NOT WORK!!!!!! ONLY THE BACKUP THIRD BRAKE LIGHT WORKS
Not sure if something stupid on my part was missed or if this was coincidental that the brake lights do not work.
MY GUESS IS THAT I DID SOMETHING STUPID!! I will again backtrack all my steps.
I would be willing to do this offline if you prefer........ or over this forum.
If you can recommend someone reputable in this area (assuming I cannot get this resolved). That is also appreciated. Venice is located between Tampa and Fort Meyers.
As always thanks to this Great Forum for it’s support!

I think you need to focus in on a broken wire, not a failed relay or component.
Do you have a multi-meter? I suggest you use that wiring diagram to check for continuity on the wires in front of, then inn back of that fuel tank.
Not understanding anything you did to replace your fuel pump, you may have accidentally lopped a wire in half.

Vee,
Thanks for the response. When I repaired the fuel pump the tank was not moved.
I cut metal out of the rear deck directly over the fuel tank port on top.
I did no see any wires on top of the tank where I cut. The wires run along the drivers side panels.
The one (1) thing I did not check is the stop light switch located over the brake pedal.
Bad enough I had to lay on my back in the trunk and I am getting old and didn’t feel like Like laying underneath the steering wheel to investigate the brake light switch.
Maybe I might have to try.
The crazy thing is everything worked before the fuel pump.
Went back retraced some of my steps and cleaned all three (3) major grounding points in the trunk.
Let me ask a question: What exactly does the brake switch do?? 1. When you push the pedal does the internal mechanism make contact and send a signal to turn the brake light on. If that is the case why does the third brake light on top work and the R/L stop light NOT!!!
That’s basically why I didn’t check the brake light switch.
Again thanks for your input and wait for more!!!
I am going to give it another day or two then go to a shop if I can find one
Thanks

OK. After studying the wiring diagram, I have a question:
1. Do the brake lights come on if you put the press the hazard light button?
2. Do the turn signals work?
3. Do the rear "fog lights" work?
4. Does your bulb failure light work on the dashboard?
Have you checked the compartments behind your tail lights in the trunk? I seem to think I have seen something that resembled this stop light bulb failure unit back there, while looking for some other relay. I believe I have seen it in the passenger's side....through the little trap door in the side of the inside of the trunk.

Vee,
Once again I appreciate your effort like mine not to give up!!
I did all of those things that you and Malc4D, Orangeblossum had suggested.
The one (1) issue I had was that I couldn’t find the Stop light bulb failure sensor......... I finally found it and I also found a really easy to understand wiring diagram for the 95/96 xjs from jag repair.com (Free)
With the wiring diagram I knew that the way the circuit was arranged it had to be in the sensor.
I remove the three (3) connectors, five (5) wires.........1 power in.... 1 ground....... 1 emergency brake wire....... 1 out to right stop light........ and 1 out to left stoplight.
I made my own little harness and connected the wires up and the ground then touched each of the R/L stop lights separately and each one worked. So I knew it was in the sensor. Cleaned and realigned the male/female connections and put the assembly back together.......IT WORKED!!!!!!!!
My only guess is that the connector was really dirty and while sitting outside for 1- 1/2 weeks while waiting for parts and repair/replacement of the fuel pump it “LOST IT’S ABILITY TO CONDUCT CURRENT”!!!
We are good now !!!
Thanks for your help!!!!!
Vee, I will send out shortly a separate thread for how I replaced the fuel pump without moving the tank Pe3r your request.

Softball60,
I’m so glad that you were able to solve your problem!
The link to the wiring diagrams I posted earlier in this thread indeed came from Jagrepair.com. That place has been a major resource for me over the years!
Thanks for following up and letting us all know how you resolved this.
