Default 36 MPG XJS modification??!

Cool story about some mods which supposedly allows this guy to get 36 Mpg out of his XJS. Incredible if its true. Link to stories below.

First url doesn't work

Guy is in the UK, so that is imperial MPG. personally I think changing the wiring harness out and all that is an extreme length to get better mpg.

A straight six with a 5 speed with 500 pounds shed, after having to change the entire wiring harness out to get 29mpg us??

Not worth it to me. If you put a 6 speed and change the rear end in a STOCK 5.3 I am willing to bet you could get that highway. Around town the v12 has enough torque to driving pretty low in gears too. If I can get 19 out of it if I try with this stupid 3 speed I bet I can get 25mpg all day without trying with a 6 speed

I also read this, but if I did this all, I could never retrieve the cost from fuel savings lol

Going from copper wire to aluminum may have shaved LBS, but I would not trust aluminum wire. It was once tried as a cheaper alternative in the US and you have to use a heavier gage wire to carry the same load as copper, if you don't it will fizzle and fry

I just don't really get going to those kind of lengths to save such a small amount of money. He lives in the UK too. Spend some money on a little diesel or an old morris for gas and drive the XJS for fun

Anybody with an XJS actually considers MPG outside of a road trip and whether or not they can make it to the next petrol station?

Really?

Fill it up and stomp the throttle through the floor.

I tend to agree...but there are many ways to enjoy the car hobby and not all of them will make sense to everyone

Cheers
