Default 83 XJS, runs great but no go?

trying to figure out what is up with my buddies XJS.

car runs well, purrs like a kitten. doesnt smoke or leak a drop. coils just converted to single coil. no other modifications. low miles too.

even before the coil replacement this car feels like it has no go. we cannot diagnose anything wrong with the car, because it runs so well. any ideas? i can provide whatever info needed.

I don't know what you mean by no go but I have a 90 that would idle perfect but to give it gas it would stumble...changed the fuel pump and it runs like a scalded dog...keeps me pressed in the seat, I hear the cats get plugged easy and makes it lose power also...hope it helps..L

Put the car in low and floor it, it should pull you past 6,000 before the trans forces a shift, if it won't do this start by freeing up your distributor and re timing and see how it runs

thanks i'll have to check that out.

so i drove the beaut for about 220 miles or so.

its a nice piece. great shape.

so it has an idle problem. when it gets under 38mph, the idle kicks up. my guess is some sort of FIAC valve or a bad vacuum line. im going to check this out. it also hunts at idle, i think between 500 and 1500 rpms. up and down.

the console doesnt light up completely and the e-brake doesnt work. gas gauge doesnt work. it definately sips gas!

it really feels as fast as my little evo up there that is only about 100whp.

are there any links to some sort of online shop manual?

And I'm back! The Jaguar is out of storage and back on the road. So far I've fixed a bunch of little things, like all the lights, brakes and such to get it road ready.

I have a few problems left. The car still runs mint but slow. I have not yet checked the timing but will within the next week or so.

Windshield wipers do not work. We replaced the motor with a known good one but still cannot get any power. I wonder if it has anything to do with the switch.

Fuel gauge and sender are having trouble. The gauge does not read on the dash. I measured the voltages at the sender.
FULL- 3.76 volts
100 miles - 3.64 volts
150 miles - 1.5 volts
I'm guessing the sender could possibly be bad, as well as the gauge?

No reverse lights. Voltage at the bulbs is about 1.x volts. I'm thinking I should pull apart the center console and check the reverse switch for the lights.

I have this horrible Haynes shop manual for this and about 5 other Jags around this 1983 model year. Is there a better manual I can download on the internet somewhere? I checked out the JITS but it does not go back far enough for this car.

Any help would be greatly appreciated

We have determined with the wipers that the column stalk is OK, and so is the wiring all the way to the cannon plug on the cowl. Also, the harness that connects from the cowl to the motor is good. The motor is bad.
