Default 84 XJS Auto Speedo Transducer

Greetings,

got around to "attempting" to change the speedo transducer on my XJS today.

After undoing the knurled round nut and removing the transducer from the transmission (T400), i could no see or feel or locate the plug on the cable. The cable runs up vertically from the transducer. I gave it a reasonably good tug but this did not produce the plug or anything else.

What route does this cable take from the transducer.

Can i go in through the center console or do i take out a few bolts on the rear transmission mount lowering the transmission a bit and see if that makes any difference.....?

the attached photo is the new transducer.....note the hex not and not a knurled round one...!

Thanks

Darren

Here is a shot of the plug on mine. The cable goes along the LHS of the tranny and up into the cabin via a rubber grommet in the tunnel LHS towards the front where the tunnel widens out. As far as I can remember I do not think there is an access hatch in the tunnel, so removing the console will not help. If you remove the LHS exhaust, I think you will see, and be able to get to, the plug quite easily. Pulling the cable will probably not help as it should be held in place by fixings. There is also the kickdown cable in this area (it has a big lump of silicone on it, just visible in the pic below and to the right of the white plug, below the gearbox selector cable). The white plug is the transducer plug.

Mine were the same as Gregs.

The grommet Greg mentions is in the LH side of the floor "hump" just forward of the seat mounting bolt. Removing the LH console cheek and pulling the console side outward a little you will find it buried in the many wires etc in that area.

However the connector plugs were always outside the cabin.

You mention your wiring goes vertical?, which I have never seen.

It took me some digging to find those wires, as my Cruise lost its pulse signal, and that is when I found that the Yellow wire inside the console area "splits" off to go to the speedo/cruise/trip computer, and the cruise wire on mine had parted company with that splice.

Thanks Gentlemen,

Grant....yes the wire does go up from the transducer and feels like it goes to the top of the transmission and not along the side of the trans....previous owner had the modified rear transmission mount fitted, so it may have got tangled up somewhere in this process.

Greg....will go the route of dropping the left exhaust pipe and see i this reveals anything....it's gotta come out some how.

......your combined info here should make for a simpler exercise

Away with work for a while as of Monday so it will take a while before i attempt this one again (probably late Jan / early Feb) as i will go the use of a hoist to do it...www.mmatesplaceperth.com.........combine an under body grease / lube and oil change etc into the exercise.

Will post the results when....!

Thanks

Darren

Default Speedo Transducer

made it home for a few days and got into the Speedo Tranducer....dropped the left side pipe and the rear trans mound and as suspected the cable had been tucked up over the transmission....to stop it getting fried by the the exhaust i can only guess......anyway replaced it....ran it along the side of the trans as its meant to be clamped off and in a heat resistant sheath....same as Greg in Frances Photo in this thread.....went to take a happy snap but phone had gone flat.....oh bother....oil change and lube while i was under there..!

all good and thanks for the help guys......see my next thread
