Default 92 xjs v12 electric aux fan help

Hey everyone,
having trouble confirming if my aux fan is working properly. I have tested that the fan does in fact work if I wire directly but its not coming on when the temp is quite high. I have removed the two wires that I believe to be the sensor that would initiate the fan at temperature and when I do that I just hear a relay click. The fan does not come on.
Any ideas? Is this the right thermostat that controls the aux fan? appears to be at the water pump.

Pull the two leads off the water pump thermostatic switch (the one in your photo as far as I can see) and connect them together. Then start the engine and the fan should run. If not also switch on the aircon and see if that makes any difference. If it does not run after these tests, you have a wiring or fuse fault.
You could swap the thermostatic switch for a new 85 degree one if all works in the test above and you think the switch is getting faulty, they are cheap.

Many thx,
I connected those two wires together and all I hear is a relay clicking. I can't believe the aux fan would have a relay and a fuse ? Do you think that's possible?

Most things in these cars have a relay and a fuse. The relay is to switch the power on and off and the fuse is to protect against short circuits - different jobs.

Bridging those should make the fan go while the car is keyed on. Maybe give your fan a whack with a rubber mallet before writing it off entirely. The relay should be the blue one right beside your driverside air filter housing.

If the relay is clicking then the control side is fine (ie the system that tells the relay to send power to the fan) is OK. Find the relay, as it might be faulty on the high-current side, and find the fuse to check it. On my earlier car, the frontmost fuse on the LHS inner wing is shown as one of the horn circuit fuses, but it also fuses the electric fan, even though the official Jaguar manual does not say it does, so check that carefully too

The OP said the fan works if wired directly to current.

Mine didn't work either until I replaced the blue relay with an upgraded new (black) relay from Jaguar. I believe the blue ones have problems as they have been superseded....

The way I know my Aux cooling fan works is by opening the hood after good drive — the fan always stays on (spinning) for a minute or two, even when the engine is shut down.

if you don’t have this, there is obviously something wrong with the circuit to the fan (given that you already confirmed the fan turns on when you supply juice to it directly)
