It's Sunday morning, I am two hours away from home and my 1994 Jaguar XJS 6 cyl (76K miles) won't crank.
Battery and connextions are good.
I jiggled the gear shift selector, tried starting in nuetral, no crank. I know there is a safety switch which is made up when the car is in park. When I do turn the key to start I do hear a "click" inside the car.
I removed each of the relays and the 30 amp fuse in the teunk as shown in the pic, and the engine cranked and started. Dumb luck or do I have something else that I need to pursue when I return home? Starter solenoid and/or starter motor?
As Vee says, those 6 relays can have no impact on the car starting. But there are relays and fuseboxes all over the car - both sides of the engine bay, under the dash on both sides, inside both rear wheel arches, behind the RH rear light etc. I'd really suggest you spend time understanding the car, the layout of all the fuses and relays, and what they all do. Don't consider running an XJS with out a full set of the wiring diagrams, workshop manuals etc.
Maybe you disturbed that battery, just below it? Any sign of corrosion on the terminals? Maybe a loose connection at the battery?
Don' be so fast to discount what he did as not consequential.
If one of the convertible top circuits have a fault, it may disable the starter.
Do the lights dim when you try to start the car?
No. You can remove all of the relays and it will not affect the car's ability to start.
How old is the battery? It is plausible that it can no longer deliver the voltage needed to start it? These cars are finicky with having a proper charge on the battery?
That click you describe...is it from within the cabin, or from under the hood? You should hear a click when you depress the brake pedal. I'm trying to figure if the starter is stuck, or short of power.

The battery was replaced 8/24/2022, so one year.
Key on, depress brake pedal and I hear a click in the cabin.
I have a hard time believing this car is that finnicky on battery power.
Because I've been able to stsrt only by sliding the gear selector back and forth, it sounds to me like the transmission mounter rotary switch which is priced at over $1000.00. Yikes!
