Default '96 Instrument lighting

My headlights would sometimes stop working while driving. The tail lights were not affected. Checked the headlight logic control, and that seemed to be the culprit. However, the dash lights have now quit. They will not come on with the headlights, and yes, I have tried the dimmer. All the idiot lights work. Can anyone point me in a direction?

Have you checked fuses? The dash lights are completely independent of the headlights.

On the drivers side fuse box under the hood, you should have 7.5A orange fuse in position 18. Check that.

Checked that, it's not the problem. Still searching for answers...

In that case, your best bet would be to check continuity between the dash wire and the fuse….with the dimmer probably in between.

it’s not a common problem I’m afraid.

jagrepair.com will have the electrical diagrams you’ll need.

Pulling the dash out will reveal the harness you’ll need to check with your multimeter. The bunch of wiring heading into that harness, if I recall, is pretty thick, so it would probably be easier to do it that way.

While your dash is out, you can check for corrosion and might as well replace all the bulbs.

If your headlight control module is not working I have one.
Same for dimmer controller.
If you need the switch-pack on the column...got it too.
Also have a few NOS dash cluster bulbs.
PM me if anything interests you.

Open up your headlight module and resolder the broken soldering. Easy fix I had to do when I first bought the car. If you replace it, dont throw it away. Repairing is far more reliable than a nonreworked module.

The sell new headlight modules now. I don't disagree with your, don't throw it out statement, but there's absolutely no reason why anyone should be buying a 25+ year old part when new ones are available.

The new ones will also fail unless, they beefed up the soldering

cafexjs,

Have you tried just bypassing the dimmer switch to take that out of the equation?

My "new one" has been going strong on my daily driver since 2014.

ptjs1 has an excellent suggestion. Bypassing that dimmer might be the ticket.

Thanks for all your comments. I've been away from it for a little while. When I have an answer, I'll let you all know.

my new one lasted from 1994-2018, but it eventually failed. Soldering points are weak and they will fail after X amounts of heat cycles.

Is there any way to test the dimmer control module, outside of trying a new one in its place? Can anyone point me to the ground connection post on the interior?
