Hi - The XJS has been sitting for a while without a much use, and I have reignited my joy with the XJS after some turbulent times.
It feels good to be looking at the XJS again, it was meant to have been sold, but here I am with the XJS and its all good!
So on to the XJS - the air con is getting weak and taking a long time to get cool, and it only gets a slightly cool.
There is oil on the air con compressor pulley, it gets slightly wet. After looking at the air con info just posted I noticed that the front seal can be changed... and this is likley to be the reason?
Anyone have experance changing this seal and regassing?
I have no idea what gas is in it, a mate regassed it a couple of years ago... I get the feeling it was an old bottle of gas... but it was nice and cold....
The old owner spent quite a lot on the aircon before I purchased the car.. 6yrs ago.
The oil looks green.... I thought it was coolant at first.
It is necessary to replace the
input shaft seal of the Sanden compressor with a seal compatible
with the R-134a refrigerant and oil as described in the Technical
Guide. Harrison compressors do not require replacement of the
shaft seal.
Thanks for the info... I will have a read tonight.
I wonder if I remove the compressor and take it to a Jag shop who have the tools, how much they would charge to change the seal?
Looks to hard for the average home mechanic without special tools....
When re gassing do you have to add oil first?
I have no idea how it works...
The Harrison A6 compressor has been around for more than half a century. Jag shops will have fewer tools and less experience than GM shops in the US.(maybe everywhere?)
Maybe old Holden cars used the A6?
It will likely be cheaper to just replace the compressor. Labor will eat you up on changing the seal, if you can even find a place to do it. The V12 compressor is a cinch to replace, and you have to R&R it whatever you do. There are now aluminum A6 compressor direct replacements that weigh a lot less and reports on them are good. I'd avoid rebuilt A6s as a lot of them fail; they are all ancient now, and most are just worn out.
I ran the car today, the aircon works blowing cold air. i recon it could be colder but its ok.
The hose gets cold....
Defiantly oil must be leaking out as there is green oil on the pulley.
If it is leaking oil can the oil be topped up?
I am assuming the system is R12... it had a total overhaul about 10yrs ago.
My mate topped up the coolant 2yrs ago.... I will ask him if it was R12.
He said it is was a bottle of gas he had left....
Some R134a refill cans are obtainable with oil in them. R12 is not available in small cans anymore. I'd be surprised if ii is still on R12. A quick look at the low and high side fittings will tell you.
