Default Auxiliary Cooling Fan, '96 4.0

My auxiliary cooling fan is not kicking on. The one behind the grille on the right side. Any suggestions for where to look for a solution?

depends on what you want to do and what is wrong.

Is the stock aux fan working? You can test it by unplugging the radiator switch and shorting the plug to see if it comes on. If it does, then your radiator switch is broken/ not operative. You can create you own new with a whaler switch like I did here:

https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...h-aj16-219624/

that will put you back at normal stock operating functions.

if your fan is shot, then you would still probably want to change out your switch, but also go ahead and modify the entire aux fan system…..I normally prefer to keep everything stock and cringe at “mods” but that fan is too weak and does not help the A/C . This is the one place where I have done the greatest amount of modifications to my car.

My solution to the aux fan issue was to

1- Remove the stock aux fan
2- Put a heavy duty Spal aux fan in its place
3- Put an **additional** spal pancake type aux fan to its left (so I have TWO aux fans)
4-Wire the aux fan system to come on with the ACcompressor
5- put a lower temp radiator switch as shown in the link above (this will make the fan stay on a while longer after shut-down to cool the car back down)

I am very happy with this modification, but I do think that it probably takes a toll on the charging system. My XJS is in a garage plugged in to a battery tender, so I really don’t mind, but if that’s not the case for you, you probably want to carefully consider your options.

Thumbs up

Very helpful, thanks. The fan works when the harness is bridged, so the switch is bad. My primary concern with this has been AC performance at low speeds and stops. I may make the mod for engagement with the compressor. For now, I will just replace the switch. Thanks again for your excellent and informative post!

great. As a immediate solution, you can just create the new switch with your existing connector. The stock switch comes on way too late, so I would personally not pick the whaler 6010.92. The 6010.88 is probably the best option, I personally went with the 6010.82 as I mentioned before, and that basically keeps the aux fans running longer which I don’t mind

Default 3 Steps Forward 2 Steps Back

Went to install the radiator and e-fans today (very excited) only to discover that the pulley for the original fan is in the way.

Have to love these tight spaces.

Can others confirm that they had to remove the original pulley system? If so, any great lessons learned? I see that the bolts holding in in place also secure the water pump....
