Default Blower Questions?

The blowers from my 1988 XJSC. Are the tops of the blowers supposed to be blocked off like this? I see this cavity under the dash and I wonder if these are the fresh air intakes in which case the blowers shouldn't be blocked off. Right??? My fan switch was wired to this thing on top of the motor ... WTH? I don't believe this is part of my system that I'm replacing. (Delanair MK-3) Any help is greatly appreciated.

The thing at the top of your blower is an old style blower motor resisto used to give varying blower speeds. It it not supposed to be there on your car

Clcik here:

Air conditioning blower control

And scroll down just a bit to see what you are supposed to have.

From memory I'd say the what has been blocked off are the recirculation inlets. When the fresh air flaps close the recirculation flaps should open and vice-versa. Except you don't have and recirculation flaps.

As far at the hatch at the top of the blowers go, that is how the blowers are meant to be. If you pull open the vent at the bottom of the blower the top will open via a lever, as you will see. If they did not have the hatch at the top, you would be frozen in winter and cooked in summer, by a howling gale!

No idea if you have the correct blowers for the D II or DIII, but Doug has sorted that for you!

I didn't think that looked right. Thanks guys. Tonight's project is to remove all the tape and get rid of the antique control thingy & switch unless someone can use it. Seems like they took an awful lot of time and effort to really screw this system up. Maybe a previous owner was a Lucas Engineer

I'm not sure if the XJS has the same grill on the outside ( just above the hood near the wipers) that the XJ12 has. If so, you can access the blower levers that Greg mentions from that outside chamber. There was also a motor if I recall above the blower vents

I removed ALL of the tape last night and everything works exactly as you described. Now it's just a matter of consulting the wiring diagram since the plugs have been cut off. Hopefully will have it all back together over the weekend, tired of catching rides to and from work LOL

Default Blower motor wiring

The unit is installed and almost ready to put the car back together. However, I ran into another problem where the blower motors hook up. Like the Delanair unit, the plugs have been *******ized. I have a couple wiring diagrams, one is illegible and the other appears to have different amounts of and colors of wires.

The attached pic I made this evening shows where i am at. The solid color lines to the plugs from the wires are my estimations of where they go but as for the rest, I'm kind of lost. Plugs come in with more wires than I can provide. I'd appreciate any help i could get.
