Brake Failure
Hello, I took my xjs out and after 10 miles, I went to use the brakes, pedal went straight to the floor, and it intermittently, the brake would come back and have full pedal, so I limped it home and brakes kept on failing but coming back on, can anyone help or advise please.
Thanks, OJ
Thanks, OJ
Ozzyjohn.
Yoi haven't said what type of XJS you have.
There are 3 fundamentally different brake systems fitted over the life of the model. You need to be clear about which one you have.
Cheers

hello Paul, id like to say thanks for reminding me, it is an XJS v12, 5.3 litre from 1989 convertible, thanks in advance.
Classic symptom of contaminated brake fluid. Brake fluid will boil if it has moisture in it and your petal will go to the floor. Brakes will come back for a while when the fluid cools. Worth checking even if not the actual cause.
Ozzyjohn,
You have the very unconventional Teves II system.
As suggested, start by changing the fluid. You must replace the fluid on this Teves system every 2 years as you have to have clean fluid with no moisture contamination otherwise you can get disastrous failure of the ABS valve block.
Syphon out as much of the fluid from the reservoir that you can then fill with fresh fluid. Then bleed the wheel circuits. Note. You MUST bleed the rear brakes, in particular, using the Teves procedure, not a conventional bleeding procedure. Post back if you don't know how to do this.
Good luck
