Can I replace just the air-con Charge Valve?
Hi, I am trying to get the Air Con working on my recently purchased 1995 XJS 4.0 Coupe.
My local independent Jag garage tried to refill the system but found that the Charge Valve is full of RTV/Silicone of some sort (probably a previous owner was trying to stop a leak).
My mechanic says I need a whole new hose that goes from the Compressor to the Condenser – part number MHE7340BA which is no longer available.
Is it possible to just change out the Charge Valve in the old pipe- will it unscrew or is it permanently fixed in?
On Google I have seen some Charge Valves sold online with a part number MHD7372AA and another with part number MHD7372BA- would one of these be right?
Thanks!
Cass

Hi Cass,
Yes, they unscrew. It doesn’t look like they do, but I promise you that they do come off. “Lefty-loosey” applies here. 😄
Finding correct parts is always the challenge, but it sounds like you’ve well on your way. I bought a set of AC valves on eBay last year from this guy:

They fit perfectly and worked well until the entire system gave up recently.

There is a rubber ball in there that does the sealing. My guess is the rubber degraded and that is what the mechanic is seeing? These ports are well known for leaking, and are easy to replace. Both the high and low pressure side unscrew from the metal line. It doesn't look like it, but they do.

Y'all realize that there are tools that fit the valve to remove/replace without using pliers.
