Default Castor measurement & shims

Hi all,

Anybody able to guide as to how to correctly measure current Front Castor angle on my car,

Next question is, regarding shims, currently there are 2 shims each side, however I query what is "standard" I have seen written that 6 shims in total with some cars having all 6 on one side to achieve 3.5 Degrees positive camber is normal.

As mentioned my car only has 4 in total, The steering feels awfully light, twitchy and will not return to centre, Camber and Toe settings are now correct.

Anybody able to help ??

Six shims is what I've typically seen over the years. But the older parts catalogs show 8 in the "Number Required" column.

Also, there are 'thick' and 'thin' versions of the shim, which may enter into the discussion.

Cheers

More caster increases the tendency to return to center and increases steering response/feel......which might be interpreted as 'twitchy'

Lack of self-centering might be a fault elsewhere. Steering rack, ball joints, tie rods.

Two shims each side of the wishbone arm/balljoint interface (4 per side, 8 per car) is standard. To increase caster, move shims FROM the back TO the front.
Your steering fault sounds like a rack/rack bushes/balljoint problem to me.

I’m not sure I know what model year and engine you have.

I do not have my service manual, but I believe moving 1.6mm shims from front to back, they are never to be removed, makes a 1/4 degree adjustment.

I think that is the data for the camber change caused by removing/adding a shim, Vee.
