That is BS Ron. In fact the steel on the XJS is of a thicker gauge than was normal at the time, and is normal car body steel as used in the UK for decades. Rust in the UK was not a huge ownership issue until the 1980s - people just were acclimatised to their cars rusting apart within 5 or so years! Then Audi brought out the Audi 100 with a galvanised body (a steel called Zincote I seem to remember) and suddenly everyone woke up and body rust became a huge issue for buyers.
Also, until this time, car body design took no account of water traps and designing-in rustfree-ness.

Default AUX Fan not working! where do I start?

My fault for not checking that the Auxiliary (Electric Cool Down Fan) was working before I put the Fan Shroud back in the Car.

Instead I just plugged all the wires back and assumed it would work automatically as it had done in the past.

But Yesterday with Temperatures nudging 30c the needle on the Barrel Gauge went just over half way, at which point the Aux Fan should have cut in but it didn't.

So I switched her off and opened the Bonnet/Hood to let her Cool down.

This was just a road test driving her round the garden, as She still needs an MOT before I can try her out on the road for real.

But the Aux Fan needs to be sorted ASAP.

I remember, even in the early 90ies still, people would buy say a new Ford Fiesta, drive it 5 years and then scrap it. 5 years was the estimated lifespan of a car like that.

Or the Citroen 2CV. Was the same. Drive it a couple of years. Ditch it.

How else can you build like 3.000.000 Minis, 22.000.000 Beetles, 12.000.000 R4 etc.? Not because they lived for ever but because they didn't last long.

Then came the late 80ies. Zincote plating... Golf II
Didn't rust. Volvo 700: didn't rust. Audi 80: didn't rust. Result: fewer sales making less money. So the rustproofing was reduced. All of a suddenly the succesors stared to rust again, just not as fast...

Aux Fan now sorted and working thanks to 'Greg'

I eventually managed to find the Fuse that Controls it (10 Amp Blade Fuse No5) Cleaned up all the connections and joined the Thermostat Wires

together to Test it and it Worked!

As I'm not using the Car on the Road (still needs an MOT) the Temperature didn't go high enough to see if it cuts in. (nicer problems to have)

But as long as the Thermostat is OK (which it should be) that's another little problem out of the way.

One of there things possible:

#1 it passed and OB is out driving it all the time
#2 it failed and OB has set it on fire
#3 it is taking extra long and OB has moved into the MOT test facility

Default Nightmare on MOT Street!

Hi Guys

She Passed With Flying Colours!

After 14 Long Years 'Cherry Blossom'

Is Finally Back on the Road!

After Weeks of Searching, I finally found an 'Old School Garage' that looked the perfect place for an MOT.

None of this was Straightforward, it never is with me and so before I took my Car along I had to do an inspection.

To make sure that the Garage was up to muster, with no Tools scattered all over the place with Oily Rags everywhere.

They also seemed to Specialize in Classics but more important than anything else, I struck up a really good rapport with the Owner.

So what on earth could possibly go wrong?

You mean apart from chewing my fingers right down to the bone and in between times passing out in a mixture of fear and excitement.

All of which left me so traumatized that I still haven't recovered at the prospect of what might have been in the event that She failed.

For reasons that cannot be explained, I sort of got the impression that this would be something of a 'rubber stamp job'

Which just shows how wrong you can be, as they went over 'Cherry Blossom' with a fine tooth comb, leaving not a single stone unturned.

This MOT was the Strictest that I have had on any Car that I have ever owned and lasted all of TWO HOURS!

I was properly 'bricking it', I can tell you and by the time that it came to Testing the Brakes I was feeling physically sick.

As after fitting New Calipers, together with New Brake Pipes (which I made myself) I was convinced it was now all about to go wrong.

When we finally got to the dreaded Rolling Road Test, as there's only so much you can do out in the garden, at least as far as Testing the Brakes are concerned.

And when he pressed the Brake Pedal with the Car on the Rollers, I could really hardly bear to watch.

Especially when I heard him say 'that's never happened before........

What's never happened? what do you mean?

I thought a Brake Pipe must have come off and was now expecting to see Brake Fluid running everywhere.

He told me to have a look at the Dials and said the Brakes were so perfect that the numbers on both dials were exactly the same!

But now it was on to the Hand Brake and although I never use one in an Automatic, if anything when wrong with this.

Then it could mean that the IRS would then have to come out but this was unbelievably A1 Perfect as well.

But it wasn't over yet Oh No!

As he put 'Cherry Blossom' on another Lift, after which he then gave her a microscopic inspection.

Checking every single thing that you could ever think of and then made some notes on his Clip Board, which started freaking me out. OMG! OMG!

After which he disappeared into the outer Office, leaving me not knowing what was going on.

My nerves were shot to ribbons, I was shaking and nearly in tears.

Until I heard a voice say here you are, where then Seconds later I was holding the MOT Certificate in my hot sticky hand!

'Cherry' had actually passed with Flying Colours!

After which I then went down to the Post Office to TAX her (For July 1st)

Which means I cannot driver her until Saturday 1st of July.

And so Tomorrow will be the longest day!

Congrats OB! Now, that fuel you was going to use to burn CB down, can be used to drive instead

Hi Daim

I had to put £20 quids worth in before I went for the MOT and now She's empty again!

So when Saturday finally comes around it'll cost me another £100 just to fill her up and as She's been off the road so long, I am going to use every drop!

Hi Warrjon

Cheers!

But now I can't get the 'Soft Top' to go down!

The Rear Windowletts (is that a word?) go down but won't come up again.

I know I could lower it manually but I would like to get it working properly.

What I can see are Air Bubbles in the Hydraulic Pipes, that go into the Pump.

Any ideas?

Congratulations on the MOT!

Check Pump for leak they spring a leak at the point where the shaft is...
check pipes for nicks and leaks inspect the cylinders for leaks...
BUY the CORRECT fluid or all is for not!
the seal on the pump shaft is easy to buy and not a big problem to replace
(that being the hardest task of the lot)

Hi Jonathan

There was a bit of Oil around the Pump but the Pump Reservoir only had an inch of fluid left in it, so I bought some Oil and topped it up and now everything is working as it should.
