Default Coolant temp sender wire

Hi all,

Does anyone know if the wire from the temp sender emerges from the harness anywhere en route to the gauge. I'm trying to track down a low reading gauge issue. The sender resistance checks out ok. So either the wire or the gauge itself is at fault. I'm a little annoyed (at myself) because i just had the cluster out to replace the bulbs with led's and cleaned every connection while in there but forgot to do a definitive test on the gauge (yes it was reading low before). If there was an easy way to test the wire without pulling the cluster again it would be nice.

Diagram shows one at the firewall but I'm looking at an 89 diag.

Thanks for that info sidescrollin. Does your diagram show which side (engine compartment or under the dash)? If it's under the dash it might be easier to pull the cluster again with my back trouble.

Anyone know if the 89 and 87 are similar in this regard?

The sender wire goes along the bottom of the V from the sender on A bank thermostat casting and joins the loom at the rear of the engine.

Ok, that's weird. Mine joins with a common bundle that goes to the A.C. compressor at the front, then heads down into the V. It makes the exposed wire to the sender a bit short.

That is so, the a/c compressor trigger wire also runs down the V, maybe in your case in a common outer.

Ok thanks. I'll dig into it in the next day or so and see if I can trace it through.

That part of the harness connects on the RH firewall. I saw the connection at the v, sorry I didn't mention it because I wasn't sure if it meant an actual connection or if it was a vague "there are connections to various things here"

OK thanks again. I'll hunt around on the right. I would have guessed the opposite naturally

Well after all that it turned out to be a crappy connection at the sender. I figured one more test before further investigation. I disconnected from the sender and substituted a 50 Ohm resistor to ground. Hit the ignition and the gauge move to N, dead on. If I have it correct that means all is well from the connector to the gauge, leaving only the connection. Cleaned up the connecting surfaces with emery and finished with a dose of deoxit gold. Ta-dum, all fixed.
