Default Crank but no start

My 95 xjs convertible is cranking over but not starting . It ran fine the other week but today battery was down so i put a charger on it and it will crank over fine but not fire up. Where do i start? Should i be hearing the fuel pump priming every time i turn on the ignition cause i dont. I do get a p1333/ code but the diagnnotics don’t recognize it on my carsoft Help please ! Thank you jeff

Yes, fuel pump will run for 2 secs on ignition turn-on then cut out. Perhaps start by looking for fuel pump relay current output immediately when someone turns on the ignition.

Good luck

Paul

Always check the ineria switch first.
It's the easiest diagnostic and easiest fix.

unfortunately that someone is only me as i live alone. I dont recall if i could hear the fuel pump priming when sitting in the car and turning the ignition back when the car was running. Could i get further instruction on testing power to the relay ,once i find it? Thank you

Have you pressed the button at the inertia switch? It right across the hinges of the passenger door.

Better to just remove the cover and jump the wires.
Many switches fail and don't indicate it.

Thanks for the link. Every time I get to the near end where you start talking about the obd II reader the thread crashes. I’m dying to know your fix. I saw in another thread your mechanic figure it was a corroded fuel pump relay .was that the fix ultimately?

What are you using to view the thread? Are you logged in to avoid advertisements? Perhaps you are viewing on a phone? I would check it out from a regular computer.

Anyways, if you skip to Post #1906 in that thread, you'll see that he swapped out the ECU relay, which is located in the passengers knee bolster. Apparently it happens to be one of the common blue Hella relays that do go bad, Jaguar even issued a TSB to replace them! You should be able to swap it out with any of the other 11(?) similar relays to see if that's the problem!

Still no start. I believe I hear the fuel pump run for a few seconds, crank shaft sensor is new and tach registers above 5000 when cranking over the engine,I shorted the coolant temp sensor and changed out the blue relays that controll the ecu plus checked appropriate fuses 10,14, and 20 on pass side. All spark plugs are brand new. Sprayed staring fluid into air mass meter at separation of air filter can.she almost seems like shel fire up but doesn’t.ill try shorting the white wires on the inertia switch but I feel like I’m just not getting spark. Everything else seems to function. Might be time to look at the ecu.any additional advice is much appreciated

Tach should be registering about 200rpm when cranking.

Ok I shorted the inertia switch by connecting the two white wires with a jumper wire still no start. I’m looking into how to remove the ecu for inspection. After which I’ll pull the battery for load testing

I removed the ecu to inspect and clean plug connection . I did notice some dampness in the footwell so i was hopeful this ecu was the issue. It was obvious someone had been in there before. Anyway, i pulled the ecu cleaned all the teeth at the connector ,cleaned the grounding strap. Opened the ecu and it was brand new looking inside. Reinstalled and nothing changed. Of note. I think i have a flat battery as it doesnt get to 100% when being charged and my carsoft says its not communicating with the ecu on several modulars so i hoping a new battery will resolve this no start issue

Ward,
Check the battery for a few things:
Are the terminals tight and clean?
Can you check the fluid levels in each cell?
Do you have continuity from the negative posts to the chassis?
Check continuity from the positive post to the starter?

Sure looks like it, but perhaps one of the relays you messed with now bad. Tough to say, but a telltale symptom of a bad cps is not seeing 200rpm at the tach when starting...do you have the old one? Maybe swap that in to see if there's a difference?
