Default DANA Differential O-Rings

I'm looking to fix a slight weep from the diff output shafts. My '87 has the DANA diff (flat bottom, no drain plug).

The O-rings are part number JLM292 and NLA. Does anyone know of an equivalent part, or has four lying around?

Any help appreciated!

Cheers, Dave

There's an ebay listing from Australia for these (with of course $$ for international shipping), but if you can get the ID/OD & DIA you may find a suitable pack at: https://www.mcmaster.com/products/o-rings/ Viton would probably be the most ideal material.

Thanks Paul - looks like the Australia dealer has only two remaining. Thank you for tip re Viton!

Dave
You can also quite cheaply get O rings made to order, just give them the dimensions and material you want. I had all sorts of trouble with my DANA, and in the end swapped it for an Eaton TrueTrac. Best thing I ever did!
FYI, in case more info is needed:

Quick update: I ordered the two remaining from Australia. I'll measure them and post the results. If I can't find another two OEM, I'll find some locally and post how it goes.

Cheers, Dave

Dave, it might be worth measuring the groove ID of the hub so that a *rough* idea of how much stretch would be put on the O rings can be gleaned as I suspect there is some small range of sizes (ID's) that would work when slipped over the hub. - Also much easier to precisely measure than the squishy ID/OD of the O ring which we needs probably a close-but-not-exact measurement. And of course it's thickness.... looking forward to having those numbers as archived info on the forums.

You're right about O-ring measurement being tricky. I'll measure the grove diameter of the output shaft housing and the thickness of OEM rings. Also - by sliding an O-ring on a taper I should be able to get a good ID measurement without stretch.

Hi There,
Just saw this post and looked up what i used for my Dana when i had a similar problem.
After some research back then i found that it's (probably) a "British Standard size": BS148:

O-ring 3/32" x 2 3/4" (BS148)

So ti's 3/32 inch thick with ID of 2.75 inch. Searching for "BS148" will give you sources in you area,
Regards
Evert

Quick update. Shipping the OEM O-rings from Australia to San Diego was extremely quick - only four days.

I ordered Viton size 148 O-rings from McMaster-Carr and they arrived next day.

Below are raw results showing the two O-rings. They are basically identical. I believe the 148 O-rings are an available alternative to the no longer available OEM O-ring.

I'll report back when the IRS is out. It might be a while due to other projects.

OEM O-Rings - Part Number JLM292

O-Rings from McMaster-Carr

Sizing OEM rings

Sizing 148 rings

JLM292 is 0.103" dia.

148 rings appear 0.100" dia.

Side by side. 148 Viton is on left, JLM292 is on right

Just to update this thread with conclusion: The O-rings fit, and the differential is now re-sealed. IRS removal was straightforward, and no fasteners were hopelessly stuck.

I did find out that the four rear shock absorbers were all missing their sleeves in the upper eye of the shock (Part C17012). Fixed that also,

Here's a few pics:

Removing IRS with ATV jack

IRS disassembly to access differential

Differential output shaft assembly. These two O-rings need replacement.

Differential is heavy. Used crane as a secondary support in case workmate struggled with the weight!

Finished one day before the car show!

Thank you everyone for suggestions on suitable O-Rings!

Cheers, Dave
