Default Dash lights out

Out of the blue all the dash warning lights have gone off. The background lighting is still working it’s just the the lights on the dash that come on with the ignition? Anyone one any ideas? Thanks

Hi Brinny

If you're going to remove the Speedo Binnacle in order to check the 2 Multi plugs on the back, this is how I did it on my Car, including loads of photos and a Step by Step Guide, just be very careful that you don't damage the Printed Circuit which is on the back

Where other than that removing the Speedo Binnacle is a very easy job but only after the GF told me where I was going wrong!

Also may come in useful to others with 'Speedo Stopped Working' problems or anyone wanting to upgrade the Dash Lights with Brighter Bulbs

Here is the Thread: How to remove the Speedo Binnacle on a 1989/1990 XJS V12

Thanks for the assistance OB. I've had the clocks out and had a look around. Nothing obvious but then I'm no electrician! Both the plugs properly connected. I followed mr palms advice and added another earth. Gave the printed board a good dousing with electrical cleaner as well as the plugs. Put it back together and got a few lights as per the photo. What now??

I'm not entirely sure that you still have a problem. Which warning lights, specifically, are not working?

It's been years since I owned an XJS but I'm pretty sure that not all of the icons are intended to light up with the key 'on' or 'key test' mode. Actually, I recall that, on my XJS, not all of the lights/icons were intended to light up at all. I think there is some variance according to market and/or equipment/build spec

Hopefully someone with better info will chime in.

Cheers
DD

Well I hope your right Doug! I've never driven this car even though I've had it 4 years. Not sure if anything else does light up?? Thanks.

Hi Brinny

You could try gently cleaning the pins of the Multi Plugs with a small brush and some electrical cleaner

Yeah I will have another go tomorrow. Doug has a good point and looking on you tube I think I might only have a couple of lights out?

Brinny
They do NOT all light up with the ignition on. Do you have a handbook with the warning lights listed in it? If not I can photocopy the page for you.

Thanks greg. I'm just looking in the handbook now. I've had some success here because they had all gone yesterday. Maybe everything is on that should be.

Looking at my cluster again I think theres one or two bulbs gone. How do the small warning light bulbs come out? Do you just pull them? Dont want to break one in. Also are they able to go back in any way round? I know the led ones have poles and only go in a particular way. Cheers all

They just pull out Brinny, they are T5 push fits and normal bulbs are recommended, and do not have to be put in any particular way. I would chnage them all! eg:

Hi Brinny

'Greg' also recommended these bulbs to me which are not LED but are rated at 5w to make the Dash Lights Brighter

Also in the same thread, how to replace the Ariel Grommet if you ever need to

the T5s are for the warning lights. For the illumination, I use 5 watt T10s, these are a straight swap into the black holders that just pull out of the cluster.
Amazon Amazon
BUT, inside the white part of the cluster (which you remove from the black part by undoing 5 or 6 small self tappers) you will find that the illumination bulbs have dark green top hat filters over them. Remove these, then screw the black and white parts together, then insert the 5 watt T10s, then your cluster illumination will be transformed - you might even have to turn down the dimmer!
OB's thread is good on this, too.
