Dual to quad headlights

Default Dual to quad headlights

Ok, repairs are definitely underway now. Swapped subframes today.

Next question: headlight interchangeability.

My drivers headlight was totalled on my 92 facelift.

The 1991 donor has quad headlights. I've always like the look of these.

Can I transplant the quad lights from the 91 into the 92?

you should be able to, mine is not the same year (mine is an 84) but I swapped out the single to the quad, all the hookups were there.

They should bolt straight in. You need the metal chassis the reflectors are fixed to, this bolts into captive nuts that should be in your bodywork already. You may have to fabricate a lead for the main beams to splice into the main beam feed for the one-piece lamps. The the-pole connector for the one piece lamps goes straight onto the outer lamp (same bulb H4), the H1 on the inner main beam lamps needs an earth and a splice from the main bulb feed to the outer and a connector to the H1.
As you are mixing pre and post facelift, there may be fitting problems, but I doubt it.

Guys,

Thanks for the quick responses.

I went to the shop yesterday, removed the lamp assy from the donor and placed it into the facelift. They do look like they will fit.

Greg: yes, the harness will need to be modified. No big deal. This also may give me a chance to put some relays in there (a common mod I like to make with all my cars).

Good news Scott. I think the headlights are already relay-driven, by the way. But dual bulbs on high beam may require a bigger fuse in the fusebox, as you will be doubling the current draw on high beams. It did on my pre-facelift V12 anyway.

in a somewhat related question are the square one piece lights on the XJS the same for all years or do they fit differently - say a square headlight from a '86 into a 95' car... I can't find reference number as to what fits and since they are so expensive - I don't; want to buy the wrong ones...

The facelift lights are different, they fix into the chassis differently.

Have purchased these from SNG many years ago. They still look great! I would recommend going through SNG if you have any concerns about replacing the single beam with the dual beams on a facelift.

They come complete with glass e-code diffusers and the proper harness connection, making the transition a breeze.

my question was not changing from a quad headlight to a square - I wanted to find out if all the square headlights for all the models are the same - or do they change mounting from year to year

They change between the PREfacelifts and the POSTfacelifts. As soon as the rear window is elongated, the mounting points are different.

I've just dealt with doing this conversion. It was one of the first things I knew for sure I wanted to do to it when I got it. I got a donor set of quad lamp brackets and bezels and the 4 lamps (but they were old/used so I got some new Wagners for $7 ea on Amazon) and all I needed were the wiring connectors since the ones on the single big lights is a different design.
Much gratitude to William W. at SNG Barratt for dealing with me! I ordered their conversion kit minus the brackets since I had some already, but one pair of the lamp units they sell in this kit have a daytime running light that inserts into the lamp housing at an angle and prevents it from fitting into the original Jaguar lamp brackets.
So I am returning them for a refund, and just keeping the wiring harnesses since that is all you need to connect 4 of the original style Wagner or Sylvania lamps to the car.
The rings and bezels all fit, and now I am a very happy camper!
I told William at SNG that for the conversion, they need to sell just the wiring harness pairs, since that is all you need to convert from single to quad lights, when/if you can find a set of original brackets and bezels.

There's a few people here wanting quads, it seems. So how many Americans take advantage of changed legislation to convert their federalized quad-light cars to the two-light setup they were originally designed for?

I know this is an older thread, but I just got a set of the twin headlights from SNG for my 1986 XJ-S. When I was looking for an XJ-S I first passed over my car. It just didn't stand out, I wanted the quad lights and the later Jaguar wheels. From what I can determine, my car should have been sold with the quads originally in Washington State in the US at that time. The guy I bought it from got it when it was less than a year old, and he said it always had the 2 light setup as long as he owned it. first pic is the twin light set up and the starfish original wheels. Second picture has the wheels I bought. In a couple of weeks I'll post a pic with the new lights.
