Default Engine Identification help

So this engine came up for sale nearby. I'm interested, but I don't believe that it's what the seller claims.

"1987 Jaguar V-12 Engine and Transmission, 68,000 miles. Ran great when pulled from car. "

Does anyone know the vintage? I don't recognize that fuel rail. I've got an email out to the seller asking for the numbers but no response yet. Any tips on checking out a 700 lb doorstop? I'm thinking this will never sell. He's asking $1000. But he's selling it for a friend. May have no idea. Would be nice to rebuild a low mile motor while still keeping mine on the road.

Not 1987 probably closer to '77. That fuel rail was the first of them and looks to have cold start injectors. Gearbox looks like borg Warner also, not TH400.

Warrjon is dead right. That is a PRE HE, flathead engine with the PRE GM400 Borg Warner box and disastrous fuel consumption. Not good for a road car; great for making a racing engine with! Not worth 1,000 USD or anything like it.

Technically, why worry about the consumption? Not many XJ-S are used as daily drivers... Mine is a cherished nice weather car - well, when it runs

I'd love to take that engine, make a race beast out of it and make a racecar... But thatvwill be a dream...

At his asking price he is effectively storing it for me. but I do need to rebuild the XJ6. I could just slip this in there!
