Default exhaust manifold gasket substitute

has anyone come across a suitable substitute for the exhaust manifold gaskets? these are the donut gaskets from manifold to the down pipe.

ideally something i could pick up at a local parts store, rather than waiting for shipping.

parts numbers:
ebc9388
ebc4881
or
cbc4834

#3 on the diagram:

Exhaust Pipe and Catalyst-Front-5.3 Litre - Parts For XJS from (V)139052 to (V)179736 | Jaguar Heritage Parts UK

DrScientist,

One of Jaguar's parts warehouses is in the US so there's every chance that you won't have to wait for shipping from the UK. And, as you probably know, if you order it through your dealer for collection, there's no shipping costs.

Good luck

Paul

You just want a donut gasket? Just get the diameter or bring an old one, parts stores carry various donut gaskets.

Rock Auto has them. Readily available part. If you like to spend $$ go to the "usual" suspects for Jaguar parts. If you like to save $$ on the same parts look at Rock Auto, Auto Parts Warehouse, parts geek and even E-bay.

Happens sometimes, but I believe in this case gaskets are just gaskets.

The gaskets are special crushable ones. The OEM ones are more durable than the aftermarket variety which often need re-tightening after a while = total pain. IMO it is worth getting the genuine items.

I'm with Greg on this one.

If your car still has the originals take a good look at the construction. You'll see why the true OEM replacements are $12-$14 versus $3-$6 for substitutes.

Worth it? Probably, considering that replacing them is not exactly a walk in the park on a V12...especially on the steering side.

Cheers

I've only ever seen these in a material softer than the pipe, which is why they work.

XKS.com sells them for $1.97, so I don't believe they are fancy $15 gaskets by any means.

Unless it is already apart and up in the air, I agree it isn't the easiest thing to do, so I would probably order the part from XKS, welshent, SNG, etc etc and wait a few days. Only extra cost will be shipping

I purchased four, then repurchased two more after I found that two of them were slightly too large to fit!

The ones I received as a replacement looked different than the first four I received.

The first four all had a black graphite looking substance on the inside circumference of the donut.

The second pair I received did not have it. You could plainly see the metal seam.

The first four came from britishpartsuk.com, the second came from Welsh.

They both work. They both seem to do the job.

Right! But, for how long? I think that's where you'll likely find the difference in quality and/or type of construction.

Cheers

thanks for the comments.

was interested in an auto-parts store option for the convenience vs the cost. only decided to attempt this operation over the weekend yesterday. so no real time to get a shipment in.

anyway, thanks for the comments and opinions.

Idk man I'd just try those.

I've used generic donut gaskets on a land rover, morris, mg,and a few other things without any problem. But as Vee mentioned, it is possible to have issues.
