Default Facelift Power Steering Fluid - No More Dex3

I have a 1996 Jaguar XJS with the AJ16 and I'm planning on replacing the leaky power steering hoses soon.

I can't seem to find Dexron III at the local auto parts stores anymore. That was the recommended power steering fluid according to the Service Manual.

Should I just go with bottles labeled "Power Steering Fluid", or go with Dexron VI (6!)?

I hadn’t thought of that....I have a stack of $5 Advance Auto bucks that I was going to use to buy bottles one at a time.

Any Dex subsequent to Dex III should be fine,

FWIW I've used Dex, Type F, Type FA, Dex/Mercon, "universal" in my power steering systems of my various Jags. Never heard, saw, smelled, or felt a problem

Cheers

But ultimately always an ATF and never a generic "Power Steering Fluid" fluid?

Right. And I don't have a good reason other than I always have lots of ATF on hand

I never understood why Jaguar preferred ATF over "Power Steering Fluid" to begin with.

fluid changesVee,

Dex III is readily available in UK through shop and online suppliers so I would expect you can easily source online in US. I've just bought 20 litres for various autobox and PAS fluid changes. Some suppliers market under different names but indicate that it's equivalent to Dex III. Some autoboxes don't like going above Dex VI but I've not heard adverse comments on PAS systems.

Good luck

Paul
