Fan shroud question.

Fan shroud question.
Can anyone tell me what the two vinyl flaps are for on the fan shroud? What do they do and are they necessary? Many thanks as usual in advance for any replies.

They are there for a reason. When stationary, they are closed and allow the fans to draw air through the radiator rather than from in the engine bay. When moving, they open allowing for more airflow through the radiator.

The Flaps are beside the Fan, set into the Fan Shroud not on the Actual Fan itself

Flaps are top right... Would sit bottom left.
The shroud is upside down here but the flaps are the top right rectangles...

On mine the flaps had become petrified.
I bought some utility-grade sheet rubber (1/16th inch thick) on Ebay to replace 'em. It's just a matter of drilling out the rivets on the retainer straps.
