front and rear speakers

I don't believe they will fit. The depth is irrelevant, but I believe you must use speakers with a "Cutout Diameter, or Dimension" of no more than 5".
This means that the Alpine SPS-610 6.5" speaker works, but many other 6.5" speakers will not.
You have 5.25" speakers right now. Any 5.25" speaker will work. If you want to upsize them, and I recommend that you should, find something with a cutout dimension smaller than 5".

No. Like I said, 5-1/4 will fit no matter what the make or model.
That cutout will definitely work.
I went with the SPS-610, and it *JUST* fit.
Personally, I'd consider the benefit of going smaller to stick with the TypeR, versus the basic physics of having a larger speaker.
I went with the larger speaker. Someone with more knowledge will be able to give you much better advice.
As for fit, you will have nothing to worry about with the 5.25"

I do like what Warrjon did. If I ever decide to really invest in an audio system, I will follow his lead.
Good luck, take pictures and let us know how it goes! I think the mixed solution is great way to go.

I installed alpine SPR-17C speakers in the doors of my '92 convertible. They are considered 6 3/4" speakers. It's a snug fit. They are discontinued, but here's a link to the old crutchfield page and you can pull up the specs to compare diameter, mounting depth, etc.
Depth is not a big issue with the door speakers. The real issue is that the area of the inner door panel that the rim of the speakers screws into is recessed a bit, so anything too big and the speaker won't fit flush against the door panel. I used 3/8" mdf baffles between the speakers and the door panel to make it a little easier.
I think the actual size of the stock speakers for the '92 and probably the '93 XJS is non-standard, like 5.75" or 6". The previous owner had installed Polk 5.25" speakers in my car and those weren't a great fit on the panel.
Edit: To avoid confusion, when I'm talking about the door panel I'm referring to the door itself, after you remove the leather/vinyl outer door panel. On some older XJSs the speakers were attached to the outer leather/vinyl door panel but not on the later models.
