4.2??

the right engine for your car must be a 5.3 V12...

Maybe It has been changed for a XK 4.2 straight-six, like the XJ6 saloon.

Thank you. It is 4.2 straight 6. With carburettor. I am new to this jaguar. Am learning. The owner imported it to Kenya and the paper work says 1976 jaguar XJS engine 4200cc.
The gear box is not functioning. Engine cranks well and body clean .

I am considering a new gearbox. PREFERABLY manual. If not then I can buy a donor car and get some bits including the TRANSMISSION.

Please share your thoughts or experiences.
Best regards
Erastus

Just out of curiosity do you have an XJS or an XJC? They made a 2 door coupe version of the XJ6 saloon, and I'm wondering if that's what you have? Does it have the "flying buttress" on the rear with a recessed rear window or a conventional rear window?

In the photo below the car on the right is an XJC, the blue one on the left is an XJS. Notice how different the back windows are.

I'm very impressed you found a photo of those two models together. Both are a very rare site here in the country where they were built.

This is the car I just bought without Gearbox. The automatic transmission is not working. Needs a suitable replacement. The papers say it isb1976 XJ-S 4200CC

Whether it is a 4.2 litre six, or a 5.3litre V12 your best bet will probably be to find a BW model 12. I have 3 of these things now, with both 6 and V12 bellhousings. Shame it is so far from Australia to Kenya. An original manual box is almost unobtainable, but another alternative may be a ford or toyota 5 speed. Either of these conversions will be expensive.

Erastus,

Could you show us a photo of the engine bay so we can verify the engine. A 4.2 transplant into an XJS would be very unusual, if not unique.

Cheers

Paul

I have a good usee working Borg Warner 65, which sounds like would be the original type.

I'm in Canada but could ship.

Oops, I was too fast. Sorry, the 65 is not what you need. My mistake.

That's an XJS all right. Very odd that it would have been converted to a 4.2, as originally from 1975-83 they were all V12's. Have you checked that the fluid level is good? What does the fluid look like? Nice and red or does it smell burnt?

A manual transmission would be difficult, in that era only 352 cars were built with a manual, and I believe all were RHD, so finding a pedal box to be able to put a clutch pedal in yoou car would be very difficult. Assuming the engine is transplanted from an XJ6, another BW 65/66 is probably the easiest, or rebuild what you have.

Just got lucky and stumbled across that photo on the web. It's in Australia.

Hey Erastus, welcome to the forum! You've got what must be one of the coolest cars in your region. I can't wait to see how that 4.2 fits!
