Default Help w/ 83 XJS

This is a two part question, first can anyone tell me where the fuel pump relay is located? and second, does anyone know what the symptoms of a failing fuel pump is.? It seem that once my cat warms up it acts as though it runs out of fuel. After sitting a few minutes it will re-start, run for a while then die again. Yes I have replaced the obvious, plugs, coil, cap, rotor, and filter. This doesn;t leave much else. Sure appreciate any help or suggestions. Thanx guys.

Should be in the trunk, right side, sorta up there by the trunk lid hinge, behind a plastic (or perhaps carpeted) panel. It'll have orange, brown, pink/black, and brown/slate wires.

A failing fuel pump can cuase what you've described, as well as a flat-out non-starting conditon, low power, bucking/surging......

The ECU could be faulty and not providing a ground to the pump relay (try grounding the orange wire)

You might have a problem with the ignition amplifier (replace the module inside the amplifier, It's a GM part, AC Delco D1906)

The fuel sump tank pick-up could be clogged up (remove and clean)

Your primary coil could be ready to pack in.

You might have a wiring/connector/ground problem.

The list goes on.....

Next time it won't start try to verify "has spark" or "no spark"...that alone will narrow down the choices.

Post back for more details if needed.

Cheers

If I may add to Doug's list...is your A/C working? It cools the fuel line before it goes into the injectors. If your symptoms occur only when engine is warm it could be vapor-locking, which was/is a common problem.
