I recently bought a 1993 XJS 4.0 convertible, a rather special car as it's one of the few 5-speed manual cars. Anyway, the radio is shot and I would prefer to keep it original, not just for the appearance, but I have a lot of cassette tapes (and some 8-tracks, too!), plus I want it to control the CD changer in the boot.
On the radio case it says Model # AJ 9250W and Part # DAC 7614.
Nearly impossible to find now. In the words of a specialist, they were junk new, and still junk. He had a pile of over 50 that didn't work any more and he couldn't find an electronics guy who could successfully repair them. Best of luck finding one, but you might be better off trying to repair the one you have.
An Alpine of that era will control the CD changer, I went that route.
Thanks Jagboi. Actually I took it to a place in North Hollywood, called German Auto Radio Repair. This guy is an old school one-man shop, worked on radios for decades. He got it to work briefly, but it toasted a transistor. Found another, got it to work an entire day. Fired it up the next morning and in 5 minutes it was doing that Lucas joke about the smoke escaping. He says there's an intermittent short (you know, like the unintended delay on Lucas windshield wiper motorss). So I guess if he can't fix it, few people can. Is there an Alpine model that uses that same plug? Does it have a cassette in it? Do you have a model or part number?
I have the one that came out of my '93 coupe. The PO had installed an Alpine unit but the original was in the trunk along with some other bits. I'm not sure but I assume it works. Model No. AJ 9150W, Part No. DAC 8572. email me: petemohr@gmail.com if you're interested.
You could try to contact LeRoy Sorrell in Jacksonville, FL. parts@classiccargarage.net He stocks various Jaguar parts to include the XJS series. I do not know if he has any radios, but it is worth the try. I've met him. Been dealing with him for over 5 years.
The 90s vintage AJ units are terrible, yes. I replaced mine multiple times in my '95 XJR. Sent a couple out for repairs....which never lasted long even when the radio shop could do anything at all with 'em, which wasn't always the case. I was buying-up used units on Ebay just to have on hand when the inevitable failure occurred. I got to be pretty fast in swapping them out
Dave:
I just came across your post today. Did you ever find a solution to your need for a radio? I have one in excellent condition. It came out of my 1994 XJS that I bought in 2018. I wanted a CD player and was not as concerned about authenticity.
Let me know if you still need it.
Thanks,
