Jaguar Stalls and Tranmission light comes on
Hey Guys! Need some help here.. my 95 Jaguar XJS has started spontaneously stalling like it is receiving no fuel. When it happens, the transmission warning light comes on and the car goes into limp mode. I can shut it off and restart it and it will be ok again for awhile until it reoccurs. I thought maybe fuel pump or ECM. Any suggestions?
Thanks,
Paul

I’m assuming there’s no check engine light illuminated? (I’m also assuming it’s the 6 cylinder engine, but please add a signature for future reference)
I’m not sure whether an OBD2 reader works on your car or not.
The transmission light is likely the by product of the stall and has nothing to do with finding the cause.
The biggest common culprits are as follows:
1. Throttle Potentiometer Sensor
2. MAF Sensor
3. Coolant Tempersture Sensor
4. Downstream Oxygen Sensors
5. EGR Sensor
#3 is the cheapest to replace, but also cheap to diagnose. Unplug it and jump the two pins at the harness, not the sensor, and drive. If it happens again, it’s not the #3.
#5 can be cleaned apparently. I’ve never had luck with that and ended up spending the $100 or so on a new one. My engine would stall, like yours, then one day it reluctantly kicked me out a code and replacement cured the issue!
The others require multimeters for testing. There’s plenty of info on testing these components on this forum.
