Default Jaguar XJS 5.3 1977

Dear all,

another question for restoration of engine.
Do you know original color of exhaust manifolds ?
They are sand blasted and needs new paint -

Best Regards
Stan

I don't know that they were painted, you need to sort those studs before working with paint, would have been better to get them out before blasting. The colour beyond that is pretty much your preference but you need a seriously high temperature paint rated for at least 650°C or your work will be in vain, such paints don't come with many colour options. POR-15 Hitgh temp is rated to 650°C but you could see higher temperatures than that, Eastwood high temp is rated up to 760°C, VHT flame proof up to 1000 or so. Brake caliper paint will not be a long term solution on a V12 manifold ....

Thanks for replies,
We know the problem with high temp paints,
this is not our first manifold, but first Jaguar V12.
My question is about proper color.
How they were produced from factory?

Best Regards,
Stan

Greg confirmed my belief - they weren't painted - they're cast iron colour from the factory

Have you considered something like a Zircotec coating or are you sticking to (rusty) originality?

Have them ceramic coated. Will last forever and help lower temp. in engine bay.

On that note take care. There are a whole bunch of traders that claim to ceramic coat they don't really ceramic coat so make sure you know what you are getting. Application of ceramics as per aero engine or motor racing ceramics is a highly specialised field - how do I know ? - because I had mine done and walked through this particular minefield. I had mine ceramic coated inside and out, on the outside I had Black satin DiamonDyze anodise included. Genuine ceramic coating is not a DIY job, it is not powder coating although the application process is similar but uses high energy plasma deposition - Zircotec is such a coating. The downside is the cost ... I paid £150 per manifold (£600 for 4 manifolds) 2 years ago, they were gone for 3 weeks.

Does it work - If I ever stop finding stuff to fix or excuses to do other things I will let you know.

Great stuff. Could you please post some close up shots of each of the chain guides?
And how did you go about setting them correctly?

Hi Greg,

We made some measurement from old guides and set new one accordingly.
The tensioner is doing his job just fine.
The chain just touches the guides, no pressure.
We are little worried how will be after mounting of camshafts, because chain will move little bit.
What is your suggestion to look for ?

Best Regards,

Stan

Stan
I have never done this job and cannot be much help, hence my question about how yuo did it.
I do know that Grant set them up with a thin sheet of paper as a allowable "spacer" to set the clearance.

Nice work, Stan.
Did you yourself make zinc electroplating (Galvanizing) of bolts and nuts? What plating kit did you use?

I've been looking for 1000 piece jigsaw for my mum for Christmas, that should keep her occupied until Easter at least.

With the plating I can see you are doing a first class job.

For the timing chain guides, if there is any concern about alignment, you should seek out the Jaguar alignment tool JD38. If you are in the USA it can be borrowed from JCNA/Coventry Foundation. In UK I believe there is a similar loan program with Jaguar Enthusiasts Club, but don’t see mention of it online. You can also buy from Rob Beere Racing.

Dear all,

We send all bolts, nuts brackets etc.. to specialized company for galvanizing.
They required very good preparation before galvanizing, so we made blasting of them with glass *****.
The final result is great.
There are some pictures from montage of the piston sleeves and parts around engine.
The Loctite 510 is doing great job, I hope it will resist next 20 years ;-)
Thanks to Grant Francis for support all the time.

Best regards,
Stan
