oh believe me I learned that the hard way.
Excellent writeup very informative should be included in the next Kirby style Jag bible edition.
I've thought about better utilizing space in the car, there are a number of cavities not doing much but unfortunately I have the ABS system. If time and money permitted id move the pump to the trunk and i stall a compact coolant header but as its my daily driver I cant do at the moment.

Well. A small update for those interested. As it turns out my problem is a blown head gasket. I'd used the car sparingly since my last post since my area has been cold and miserably covered in snow. Today it was nice so I decided to go for a drive. She developed a rather severe miss part way through and got hot. I pulled into a gas station and popped the hood to poke around. The oil cap tells the tale. A nice vanilla milkshake on a lovely Tuesday. I'm going to have to take some time to consider my options here, lump or replacement engine. Neither seems particularly appealing if I'm to be honest.
At least the cause is now confirmed.

Well. She's back on the road for now, I'm ashamed to say my method, but I can confirm that it is not the end of the road. I simply need it back in a hurry due to Mrs.Hotrod getting a lucrative promotion that requires her to actually go to the office. I ended up experimenting with head gasket sealer. Sure as the world it's now sealed, no milkshake, no misfire, and it even has heat again. Before I become the XJS forum villain, I will mention that I have already sourced a new engine that I will be picking up to rebuild, as well as a new radiator, heater core, and hose kit. So hopefully once I have more time to deal with the issues there will be no trace of my decision left in the system. If I get a few months out of her in this arrangement, that will be plenty of time.

MAAAATE, ya gotta do what ya gotta do.
I am guilty of worse by any stretch, and when you be 600km from civilsation and the Jag has a Blonde moment, any fix is better than running out of beer in the car fridge.

I ran the gamut on my 4l some years back even going so far as to pull the head and replace the head gasket (no sign it was blown).
Radiator, thermostat, I rigged a manual switch to power the aux fan, reservoir cap, coolant flushes.
But I'm in Texas and this car apparently wasn't designed to keep cool in Texas.
The last thing you try is the thing that fixes the problem. Some Texans told me about this stuff called "Water Wetter" and by god that dropped the temp 15 degrees and it doesn't overheat anymore.
It like a miracle.
