Default Key issue

Just purchased a 1994 XJS convertible. My problem is I can't lock the car using the ignition key in the doors. I noticed that some of these cars came with multiple keys.

Can anyone tell me whether or not I should have a specific key for locking/locking the doors? The VIN = SAJNX2747RC189216

I think that you should have maybe two keys, a green valet key and 1 or 2 black keys . All should be tibbe type. Plus a couple of key fobs for the alarm.

These should be the keys in your 94 conv:

A-Black large head w/flashlight ignition/door/trunk key

B-Black small head ignition/door/trunk/ key

C-Green valet ignition/door key

D-Metal gas cap key

Thanx for the replies.

I contacted Jaguar Heritage and their response was that only one key was available with the car. I also contacted Terry's Jaguar who also verified one key. The key I currently have works in both the ignition and locks/unlocks the trunk, so either both of my door lock cylinders are bad or they were changed and the key lost.

well, it is true that the key for the ignition should unlock and lock your doors, but your car would have come new with all the same 4 keys and remotes as my 95–as I pictured above, including the page from the owners manual showing you the keys...

I can tell you that the door cylinders in my car are a bit hard to turn in either direction, and typically they are not used because the remote is used instead...

It would seem that your ignition or the two doors and trunk locks have been changed at some point.

The same single key should unlock all doors and the trunk as well as start the car. (With the exception of the green key, which can lock the trunk, but can not unlock it. Green key will start the engine and lock/unlock the doors)

Assuming you have a convertible, you’ll also have a flat key that only lock/unlocks the gas cap.

Removing the lock cylinders, although time consuming, is pretty straightforward if you ever want to consider having them “rekeyed” to your ignition key.

Im not sure how easy it is to remove the ignition cylinder.

Yes, I do have the convertible and have the appropriate “flat” key.

I’m considering taking the lock cylinders apart. Terry’s Jaguar sent me a Jaguar TIBBE key service bulletin outlining how to remove the cylinder and remove, clean, and reassemble to discs to match my key code. I just might give that a shot.

Took the lock cylinder apart yesterday and found someone changed the door locks and I don't have the proper key. I couldn't even resequence, to match my key, the 8 discs inside the cylinder that make up the key code. So looks like I'll have to replace both door locks with ones that have a key.

thanx to everyone who supplied help with this thread.

sorry to hear this. I see one full set is available on EBay they are selling it for 400 dollars, but you would have the doors, ignition and trunk as intended. Sometimes people parting cars in the forum post here and may be able to sell you a set for a more reasonable price

rwolak,

Perhaps it would just be easier (and a LOT cheaper) to get a Tibbes key cut to match the door discs and then have one key for doors and one key for ignition?

Good luck

Paul
