Default Latest acquisition, '95 XJS 6.0L and a few questions

Hey all, been a while since I've owned one of these personally but certainly not unfamiliar with them. Have had an '88 H&E in the past, a couple of other models in between such as a 99XJR and and "04 XJ8 but it is time again for my preferred model. I've worked on others V12 cars to get them right but they have all been Lucas CEI. I do prefer the Marelli as I believe it is a much better ignition. Two questions to start with:
1) How do I get the alarm to stop sounding? I don't have a remote and tried one of the key on/off suggestions with no avail. I've seen where some say you can't get rid of the alarm but the ROM claims it to be an option.

2) What on earth is the boot/trunk lid made from, it has to weigh as much as the bonnet/hood?
I have to replace the struts on it and it weighs a ton, more than any trunk lid I've ever removed, lol.

3) haven't been under it yet but thinking of making a split exhaust to merge back near the firs silencer and replace the silencer with one of the cats. Does it have downstream lambda sensors that would prevent such a move?
I know there will be more questions to come but that's all for now. I have the big multi volume shop manuals for the earlier cars both Lucas and early Marelli but not for the later 6.0L models.
Any help would be much appreciated.
Also, the mechanic for the previous owner installed a switch that enables you to turn the alarm on so as to start the car and then immediately shut it off so the alarm won't sound. Otherwise it will sound with the car running.

The trunk needs a stronger strut because of the spoiler. The best way for the alarm is of course to get 1or 2 fobs. I can't help with the turning off as mines a '92 alarm.
Do a search and you will find threads about the '96 alarm. also at the top under stickies is a ton of help.

Thanks for the reply, yes I have looked at those different threads and it seems like I may need to locate some fobs but I don't know why it would suddenly have started doing this to the previous owner after years of use. Yours' is early enough it seems to just unplug the alarm, supposedly mine won't work that way. Would love to just eliminate it but doesn't seem to be an option.

Jagman99R,

The bootlid is just a very heavy item. The spoiler isn't very heavy at all, but with the it's weight being on the end of the bootlid, Jaguar decided that it should have stronger struts. When you're buying new struts, use the part number of the ones fitted by Jaguar to cars with spoilers, not the standard strut part number.

Cheers

Paul

Here in the States, at least, the companies specializing in these struts (EG: liftsupportsdepot.com - no affiliation) don't seem to make any distinction between cars with / without spoilers; they specify a 45lb 'force' strut for all models. I may order a set of 60lb, or even 80lb, to gauge if they work better.

Yeah, had them both off before but that didn't make any difference and the fob's are pricey for sure.
