Default Leaking fuel return to tank connection

Finally found time to work on the XJS again. I have removed the tank to replace all smelly foam. I have almost everything reinstalled now.

I'm having an issue with the fuel return connection on the lower left of the tank.

When I removed it the line was fitted with a green viton olive, which was damaged so I couldn't reuse it.

I read on here that a standard brass barrel compression olive should work. A standard 8mm olive fitted the pipe ok, but it is now leaking at the union fitting.

Can anyone definitively confirm that they are using brass olives on the fuel send/return pipes with no leaks, & if possible confirm the sizes?

I don't know what I'm doing wrong but am at risk of soaking the under tank felt & the having to remove everything again!

My car has brass loves as standard and I replaced them. The pipes and olives are not metric sizes, they are Imperial. If you carefully measure the pipe diameter with calipers that will give you the imperial diameter olive you need. I cannot remember the size, sorry. The green olive you used may well be available also, if you do a search.

According to teh parts listing:

Brass olive UP TO Vin 161713 has a part # of C371336.
Brass olive FROM Vin # 161714 has the same part number, DUH.

BUT,

Viton Olive Vin # 161714 onwards, has a Part # CBC4720.

I assume from that if the pipe has a Brass Olive, then a Brass olive is used to replace it.

If the pipe has a Viton Olive, then a Viton Olive is used.

Simple???????, not in any wild dream.

I did find reference to the viton olive, but couldn't find any suppliers in the UK for reasonable £££.
I found this supplier in the USA, but they wanted US$30 for shipping!
Jaguar OLIVE VITON FUEL LINE XJ6 XJ12 XJS For the XJS application fits the 4.0L and 6.0L. For the XJ12 application fits the 6.0L..

I assume the fuel pipe itself & the fitting on the tank are the same throughout the model years, & the only difference is the olive?

Greg,
I will re-measure, but i'm sure the pipe was something like 7.96 mm diameter, which I would have expected to be close enough to 8mm to not cause an issue? 5/16" is 7.93mm so may try & find some of those.

One further point - what type of olive did you use - Barrel or stepped?

Mine being a 1985 had Brass, and "barrel" style was the OE.

I reckon the fittings would be either Brass style or Viton style, and not interchangeable, but I may be way off there.

Definitely barrel olives. The fittings each side that go through the boot corners looked identical to me, so I think, not absolutely sure, that the brass olive will do the job in the fitting that had the green olive. If you want to give a green one a go, I think that aircon pipe olives are the same stuff, they certainly look the same. Any airco guy will have loads and give you some.
