Default Looking for a part from a parts doner XJ-S

Some may see the thread concerning my ongoing troubles with the horn push assembly. Wondering if anyone with a parts donor might be willing to take the cover off the steering wheel, unscrew the white nut/brass tube assembly, and take a picture of it. If it has a part that mine may be missing I'd be happy to buy it and pay shipping.

Thanks,

John

The horn pushrod comes as an assembly and should not be dismantled beyond what you see below, very definitely no longer available so secondhand is your only option C38916 / DAC2882

the horn push should have a contact in the centre which is probably why yours has the wire

This is of course all based on year - I think the facelifts are different.

Mine has a Nardi wheel hence the wire.

Thanks guys!

Ben, could you send a photo of the far end of the horn pushrod? Yours seems to have a metal contact. Mine does not as you can see in the photo below.

Thanks,

John

Will try to get one later ... watch this space

Three more - there is no metal on the end - maybe you are seeing dirt but definitely no metal. The nylon portion is pinned and cannot move, I do not know if there is something inside the shaft but if their is you aren't replacing it - I can't get enough light on the subject - not sure if I want to get my borescope stuck in there. I have included one against a tape measure for reference.

Thanks for those photos Ben. Mine looks about like yours. When the shaft on the white nut is put in, it must be contacting some other metal part inside the steering column, but I can't get a VOM to show continuity between the shaft on the white nut and either the metal piece that rubs against the shaft furthest from the steering wheel (which has +12 volts on it) or the metal piece that rubs against the shaft that is closest to the steering wheel (which is grounded).

In this photo taken earlier in the year I can see a shaft in the center of the steering column that (apparently) the white nut shaft makes contact with. So, I'll once again pull the steering column apart to reach this piece and see if it is either grounded or has 12 volts on it. Hopefully doing this will reveal the correct path forward to fix the issue.

John

Never seen that piece and have never stripped down that far. Mine is only off because I've had the front subframe off - I know somw will say this isn't necessary.

There isn't a part listed either, I can try my borescope later but not sure what it will reveal. I will have a look on the electricals because something must get the 12 volts in there.

There is a connector on the side of the column that looks to be rivited - I also found a part that is on E-Bay - looks like this

Which I think are these items in the parts book below the steering column - C44553 etc

I have never stripped down a column to this degree either. But I am told that below that rod and making contact with it, there is a rivetted or bonded nylon piece that insulates the column outer steel tube from the 12v wiper and allows the wiper to make contact to the metal/brass inner inside the insulated piece. The wiper making contact with this insulated inner from the hole in the steel outer it pokes through.
If some problem with this item is the trouble, I do not think it is easily non-destructively accessible, and it would be easier to just source a second hand column which are easily found.
